Iraqi forces have managed to recapture another district in the northern city of Tikrit as the army continues its fight against Takfiri terrorists.
Iraqi forces reportedly retook the al-Alam district south of Tikrit from the militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on Thursday.
Despite the Iraqi army’s recent advances in the city, it still remains under the control of the Takfiri militants.
In a similar operation in the city earlier in the day, the Iraqi army took back control of a strategically located university that had fallen into the hands of the Takfiri militants.
The university was retaken from the ISIL militants following the Iraqi army’s helicopter-borne assault in Tikrit, the provincial capital of Salahuddin.
Elsewhere, in the eastern province of Diyala, Iraqi forces regained control of a strategic town home to a number of gas fields.
Iraqi armed forces managed to recapture the small town of Mansouriyat al-Jabal northeast of Baghdad shortly after it fell into the hands of the militants.
The Iraqi army has also announced that it has sent more reinforcements to the city of Samarra, north of Baghdad, after retaking control of a main road connecting the two cities.
On June 10, militants from the ISIL took control of Mosul, the provincial capital of Nineveh.
Over the past days, heavy clashes have been underway between Iraqi armed forces and the ISIL terrorists, who have threatened to spread their acts of violence to Baghdad and other Iraqi cities.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has vowed that the country’s security forces would confront the foreign-sponsored militants.
