This half term, we have been reading Cloud Busting by Malorie Blackman for our guided reading sessions. The book is about two boys, who's friendship is tested and lives are put at risk. The book, which is written in a variety of poetic styles, really captured the children and they were able to reflect on the various themes such as secrecy, friendship, fear, courage and difference.
Here are poplar class cloud busting and looking at things through the glasses of 'Fizzy Feet', or Davey as he is also known.
Today we enjoyed learning about habitats. We now know that a habitat is where an animal or plant lives. We went on a woodland adventure around the school and found many insects. We found a spider, ant, worm and even a little frog. The frog then jumped on one of our feet! We then had to draw the habitats which we had seen and label them. We had so much fun in the sunshine!
In our history lessons we have been looking at how lives changed between the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages.
Today we learnt about how trade changed the lives of people in Britain. We export and import items around the world and we have done this for thousands of years.
We played a game where we had to trade items from the Iron Age to ensure we had everything on our list to ensure we survived.
In Geography this week, we went outside to our school field and carried out some fieldwork to investigate the question – Why are natural habitats special?
Today the whole of year 5 took off to Fairlands Valley Park to complete our Geography unit on marine life. In class groups, we walked around 3 of the park's lakes noting all the different types of litter we could see. There was quite a range from small sweet wrappers to shopping trolleys and bikes! We talked about what we could all do in our own ways to reduce this pollution and protect all marine environments. We were also blessed with beautiful sunshine throughout and were able to draw snapshots of what we saw.
Families feeling safe are running a FREE 8-week term time course for Mums, Dads and carers who are looking for strategies and new ideas to help improve family life.
In English today, we learnt a new poem ‘Queue for the Zoo'. The poem is about queueing up and pretending to be the different animals whilst waiting. We spent time learning the lines and acting it out. The animals in the poem were tigers, bears, snakes, hares, rats, bats and kangaroos. Can you guess which animals we are acting out?
