1998 Eclipse Deluxe Print Set
The total solar eclipse of February 26, 1998 passed straight through the Caribbean affording millions of people the priceless opportunity of experiencing totality. Photographing from Aruba, Fred Espenak has captured the essence of this event in an amazing set of images. A brief description of each of the five photographs in the series follows.
Before totality begins, the corona appears during the diamond ring effect. Structure in the corona has been digitally enhanced and the sky background has been adjusted to match its blue naked eye appearance.
A computer enhanced image of the solar corona was created by combining twenty-two separate negatives into a single photograph (see: 1998 Composite Photo). Features on the dark face of the Moon are visible as well as a wealth of subtle details and streamers in the corona.
This close up portrait of the inner corona and ruby-red prominences was created by computer processing a dozen separate photographs into the final image. Polar brushes and other fine details are visible in the corona and vivid prominences are revealed.
The appearance of Baily's beads signals the end of totality. This unique sequence records the beads' first appearance and their development against a forest of red prominences.
At 3rd contact, the diamond ring effect heralds the end of totality. Seconds later the corona fades from view as daylight returns and oaths are sworn to see another total eclipse of the Sun!
Cloudy skies hampered photography of the partial phases from Espenak's observing site in Oranjestad, Aruba. But the heavens cleared miraculously just minutes before totality allowing Espenak to capture the grand spectacle on film.
You can now order deluxe 8" x 12" enlargements of these photographs. Each glossy print is made directly from Espenak's original digital files onto photographic paper using a top quality digital printer. This process offers continuous tone photographic output combined with the archival quality of true photographs.
Poster-size enlargements (12" x 18" up to 24" x 36") of the 1998 total solar eclipse are also available. A state-of-the-art digital printer is used which can achieve color fidelity and saturation superior to any analog photographic process. And since our photographic files are digital, nothing is lost in the transition. The best paper and inks are used for incredible color, sharpness, brilliance and long life. Under normal viewing conditions, these prints will last for several decades with no perceptual fading.
Each print reveals a wealth of details with incredible sharpness, brilliance, contrast and color. Re-live the excitement and beauty of totality through these unique photographs.
