tonight at 8:00 on cnn doesn't want donald trump to see our kfile unearthing it. these are vance's comments in the weeks after the 2020 election admitting joe biden won it. now this is consistent with the old jd vance, who was a vocal trump critic, but it is of course a very far cry from what we hear from vance now, which case and point here he is at the vp debate last week did he lose the 2020 election tim, i'm focused on the future obviously donald trump and i think that there were problems in 2020 all right. andrew kaczynski of kfile is outfront. so what did you find? >> yeah, erin, it is really shows donald trump's stranglehold over the republican party that the question of did donald trump lose in 2020 has become seen as a gotcha question. it is not a gotcha question. and vance's answers around this really reflect his shift from someone who was once calling donald trump, possibly america's hitler, to somebody who is now parroting his false election rhetoric. but that is not how he always felt. take a listen to this clip from november of 2020 i really don't see any reason to think that this is going to become you're violent or chaotic. i think that when biden's inaugurated, people will feel more or less accept it. it'll be on to the next fight. >> and what does vance say there? he says that biden is going to be inaugurated. he said that he does not think things are going to get violent and that is a remarkable shift from him parroting those false election claims today, it certainly is now. >> he is singing a very different tune now, right? he says things very differently. which shifts kind of tracks with his run for office. i mean, here's just a few examples i think the election was stolen from trump obviously, republicans, a lot of us don't trust the results of the 2020 election evidence that there were issues back in 2020, particularly in pennsylvania and yet even in that context, just today, andrew, he said something that i thought was remarkable just in the context of fact that he's now going along with the election was stolen irregular. >> all those things to your point about violence. he said this today we discourage ryan. we do not riot nobody in this room and nobody in this movement is going to ryan about where when he weighs in and what he says about this issue yeah. >> look, we went through every jd vance when he when he was nominated, every jd vance tweet, we went through his deleted tweets. we went through his legs, we went through his public statements and interviews after the election, before the election we did not find one single instance of him claiming that the 2020 election was stolen. in fact, we found the opposite of that until he decides to run for office. and at that point, he is basically making a play for donald trump's endorsement. he's a former critic and we see him out there with the same rhetoric as basically every other candidate in that crowded republican primary for the ohio then it saying that trump, the election was stolen from donald trump. >> when you look at that diagram, when he runs, you see the shift interesting what trample think of what he says today. we do not write nobody in this movement, nobody in this room is going to riot that, that was a significant moment. alright, andrew, thank

and this is cnn tonight the tweets, the next white house press secretary did not want donald trump to see a k file investigation finding karoline leavitt deleted two posts involving january sixth, one praising capitol police and another praising mike pence praising mike pence for upholding the 2020 election results. >> andrew kaczynski joins me now. all right andrew, tell me more about what you found. >> well, that's right, we found multiple posts that she had deleted on january 6th in the aftermath of that riot that she had sent. one of them praised vice president mike pence for certifying the election. the other praised a capitol hill police officer. and i want to run people through both of them and talk about the significance of it. now, let's take a look here at this pence one. first, where she's retweeting someone. this is on her feed. she took it off. it says love him or hate him. he kept the wheels of democracy moving and pushed forward to certify his own loss. thank you, mr. vice president. that post also included a video of mike pence certifying the election, calling it a dark day in our nation's history well, why did she remove that? well, that post essentially admits that donald trump lost the 2020 election, something that he still doesn't admit and something that the entire republican party has been just such a big part of the trump movement. now, this other one that she removed is really interesting. it's a post in which she praised a capitol hill police officer she called him a, quote, hero and what did this, this, this guy do well, this capitol hill police officer, eugene goodman, and there were rioters essentially sort of trailing him up the steps near the entrance to the senate chambers. he made a quick decision, led senators away from the entrance to that chamber. he was credited with saving possibly senators lives. she deleted that tweet. and, you know essentially that post sort of admits that donald trump was putting people in danger by sending that mob to that capitol. >> both of those are clear. and of course, as you point out now, deleted. she then ran for congress in new hampshire in 2021, one of the youngest people ever to do that. and you found out she really changed her tune during that campaign. so what did you find there? >> yeah. and if you fast forward to that 2022 campaign for congress, she was running in a primary against another candidate. she really ran all out as an election denier. she said. in some of these videos that were viewed she was the only candidate in the race who would say that donald trump won the 2020 election. she spread false claims that biden didn't win 81 million votes, claims that there were voting irregularities she vowed that she would get to the bottom of the 2020 election. it's a very big shift from where she was after that capitol riot. listen to some of those comments i am the only candidate in this race to say that president trump won in 2020, and i will work my hardest every single day to ensure we get to the bottom of it. >> i do believe that if we were to audit all 50 states in this country, there is absolutely no way that we would find that joe biden legitimately won 81 million votes. >> i fundamentally do not believe that now, we should note that she did go on to lose that congressional race in new hampshire by by ten points in what was a wave year, sort of for republicans. >> now we reached out to the trump transition. we asked for comment. and this is what they told us about this. they said caroline was completely correct in saying there were irregularities irregularities with the 2020 election and any cases of fraud should be investigated in order to protect and preserve the sanctity of our democracy. uh, she said she will make a wonderful press secretary championing the values and agenda of president trump. and there is nobody better who can articulate that to the public. so going back to those 2020 election lies in that statement. right, right. >> and of course ignoring those tweets that you have unearthed,

just one wash. >>> the only good thing about being in the swamp is you get to sit in the dojo that steve bannon built and that is where i am operating right now in my trump old mania t-shirt because that is is what it is all about. >> that is kash patel, the man trump's nominated to run the fbi. he has never worked for the fbi but he does host steve bannon's "war room" podcast a lot where he loves to share conspiracy theories. >> the chinese, the ccp, helped fund portions of the biden campaign. get the sergeant in arms to go out and arrest merrick garland. they want everything and every way to rigged this system, just like the censorship regime. we are going back to wuhan, going back to covid origins, and going back to another form of a mega virus that can take out china's enemies. they are in on it with the mainstream media, the biden- harris-walls campaign, and of course, the fbi. >> like so many guys in trump world, patel just can't stop talking which, you know, game recognize game. these folks are mostly made of podcasts at this point and from the little i have heard from what he has been saying is really out there. joining me now is someone who has spent a lot of time listening to those podcasts, zach is a senior correspondent at box where he covers democracy and the far right, his latest piece is titled "i listened to hours of trump's fbi pick on steve bannon's podcast. oh, boy." zach, thank you for doing this genuinely important work. i guess, what is first, your sort of top line about what you came away thinking about, the qualifications and worldview of this individual? >> yeah, kash patel may or may not have significant experience with government, it depends on how you assess his time with the trump administration. what he does have is a very, very harried worldview, that is the best way to describe it. he is constantly drawing connections between one threat and the other, an external threat to american security, and whatever problem he has with the biden administration or democrats at the moment, all of which circles back to a kind of personal threat against donald trump, who he sees as really the linchpin of the american republic, at least in the way he talked about things on this podcast. >> the overwhelming impression is that patel is a man whose entire world real -- view revolves around conspiracy theory specifically american conspiracy theories against americans and trump, i thought this was a really interesting observation. i am reading the beverly gage pulitzer prize-winning biography of j edgar hoover right now, in some ways printed by what is going on. he said there is a specific kind of session that reminds me of the fbi's first director, j edgar hoover, a man who infamously abused his power to persecute political enemies. tell me more about that? >> so, hoover basically built his worldview after this kind of fear, post-world war ii fear of infiltration, attacks on american soil. he was worried about, for instance, kamikaze attacks happening inside the united states after what had happened on the pacific front during the war and he believed the soviets were responsible. in this sense that the soviets were infiltrating american government in order to execute these actual, kinetic plots against the united states, in addition to whatever else the soviets wanted to do, really defined what hoover was concerned about and led him to see soviet agents basically anymore. and what patel does, there is no one overriding threat like the soviets, but he strings together a few different enemies, like china at some points, iran at other points, sometimes even drug dealers, bringing people across borders. and all of them are linked back in varying ways to the democratic party and domestic enemies. you played that clip of him talking about china funding biden. there is no real evidence for this, right? his argument is a report, i believe i tried to trace it back, the house republicans had put out that suggested that maybe there had been some foreign money going to act blue, the democratic crowdfunding platform but that is not good evidence to say that china is funneling money to the biden campaign. but, it is important for him to make this argument because it creates a justification to be able to say, when i go after them, as fbi director, right, it is different from when they went after me, which is what he believes happened, when the government was under biden's control. >> right. i want to play two clips, here. one is about using this model he used when he was a staffer in the intelligence committee to essentially fight this media war through leaks and use of official documents, that he says he wants to sort of export as a kind of model for fighting back against trump's enemies. take a listen. >> this is how we won russia gait. we not only want the congress, we used the white house, we use the power of educating the american public with the corruption author's own documents from fbi and doj, and it can be done. steve, just think about that. we did that at one place in the fbi, mainly, and a little bit of doj. just think about what you can do, if you can do it all at once, at dod, at the cia, at the doj, after the fbi, at treasury, at state, and the list goes on. >> basically, the idea of using government documents in your possession for official purposes, as a tool of essentially selective leaking for propaganda. >> yeah, i mean, his view is that the domestic enemy is literally the enemy, right? that there is not a meaningful distinction in many ways between a foreign threat and a domestic one. and so, when you take that belief, when you believe -- he wrote a book called "government gangsters." he is talking all the time on these podcasts, and the argument of the book is very literal. the american government is a kind of model operation that is directed at republicans and donald trump, that is designed to direct his own power and keep the deep state in power, personally. he even has a literal enemies list in the appendix where he lists 50 odd people who he believes are part of this nefarious group of government gangsters, the deep state. and patel believes that they have weapon iced the state against republicans and the only way to fight back is to weapon the state against them. that doesn't mean playing by the rules, or within the normal balance, it means doing whatever you need to do in order to make sure you win the political war. >> there is another clip where he sort of promises to go after the media, whether civilly or criminally, this one has gotten

>> well, i think he, i'm going to try to talk him out of that idea. i don't think the press is the enmy. i don't think. you have probably grown in the last eight years, he has too. >> reporter: joining me now is michelle norris who left the postin the wake of bezos decision to pull the postendorsement of kamala harris and she's now, we're happy, happy, happy about it a senior contributing editor here at msnbc. it's great to see you. thank you for coming on to this program on a friday night. >> so good to be with you alex. >> there's no one i want to talk to more about all of this than you. in this same deal and conference where bezos made his comments about trump growing up. he said trump is calmer and has grown in the past eight years. the owner of your former paper, i wonder what went thereupon your mind when you heard those comments. >> people should really listen to the full interview. it's very interesting. listen jeff bezos owns the paper. it's his prerogative to do what he wants at the paper. when he was talking about trying to convince donald trump that the press is not the enemy. that's a steep hill to climb with this president. because he entered into politics on a hot dust of grievance. and much of that was directed at the media. you know, the phrase fake news has entered our lexicon because of him. and we should be clear it's not that he sees everyone in the media as his enemy. he has appointed several people from fox news to be part of this cabinet and his in coming administration. what he does not like is scrutiny. what he does not like is a press core that's willing to ask tough questions. what he does not like is a press core that will put his policies and his leadership under a microscope. and, i flattery will not work in trying to change his mind. we've seen that for the last eight years. i applaud his optimism but i don't think it's going to help. >> that may relate or not to his business interest in the next trump administration. i do have to ask about the l.a. times. because if bezos is trying to appeal to trump's favor is one thing. dr. patrick chong installing an ai sort of manipulation to i guess cement the notion that the news is bias and in some way fake, seems deeply undiplomatic that the press is not truthful. what do you think about the mechanism set to take on the times in january. >> we've entered the, realm of strange now. if you're using ai. that means you don't trust your journalists. if you have to bring an algorithmic technology to determine whether there's bias in the newsroom. that means you don't trust your journalists or you don't trust your editors or the editorial process. there's several things that are not answered. is this going to apply to, stories that are in the opinion page or in the paper over all. because there is a distinct difference and for people watching understand that. you should expect to see opinions in the opinion section. but in the general section of the paper you expect to see fair and unbalanced coverage. if you're using, when he explained it he said that people could press a button so they could see the story written from the opposite point of view. well that suggests that, for stories that there's only two points of view. and life is often much more complicated than that. so when beat reporters and the body of their coverage what they try to do is present all sides of the story. and there's often not just two sides. there are often many nuances. and you know, there's also a baseline issue alex with ai itself. we understand that ai learns from us. and ai often absorbs our biases. even when they're deeply embedded. when there's an implicit cognition where they don't think where the bias comes in. it creeps in. there's voice recognition technology. that other forms of ai that are being used it's often encrypt. there's another story in the news right now with the man that was assassinated in new york city. you know united health care. his company was under investigation because they were using an ai system to measure medical claims. and that system had a 90% failure rate. and when it comes to bias, ai is not, it's not immune from bias itself. so you know there's a larger issue here with trust in the media. and the owners having trust in the people that they hire. and trying to earn trust from their consumer base. and it's difficult when, they themselves have introduced a new form, a new place for those consumers to see bias because of their business interest. and that's one of the issues we have too face if we're talking about trust in the media. >> technology somehow entering this world purposefully made money by the right wing in the media. what can go wrong? there's no better person than try to navigate it than with

notorious prisons operated by assad. thousands of people deemed enemies of the previous regime were held tortured in those prisons. many have disappeared. cnn's clarissa ward visited one facility and made an incredible discovery. here's her report. >> deep in the belly of the regime's air force intelligence headquarters. these are english letters. we are hoping to find traces of austin tice, an american journalist held captive in syria since 2012. it's one of many secret prisons across the city. this specific branch was tasked with surveillance, arrest and killing of all regime critics. >> these are all cleaned out. >> we don't find any hints of ties, but come across something extraordinary. >> i can't tell, though. it might just be a blanket, but it's the only cell that's locked. >> is he going to shoot it? >> the guard makes us turn the camera off while he shoots the lock off the cell door brace up we go in to get a closer look. it's still not clear if there is something under the blanket. oh. >> it moved. is there someone there? well, i thought i saw it move. is someone there? or is it just a blanket? >> i don't know. i'm a little. i think it's someone. hello? okay. he's just. i just. yeah. oh that's okay, that's okay. >> murphy. murphy john joyce. journalist. journalist. >> i'm a civilian. he says. i'm a civilian. >> it's okay, it's okay, it's okay. hamas. jay-z. hamas. >> he tells the fighter he's from the city of homs and has been in the cell for three months. >> okay, okay. >> you're okay. you're okay. you're okay, you're okay nala. clutches my arm tightly with both hands. okay does anyone have any water water? >> a dish of my my my my my my my. okay. >> it's water. it's water okay. okay okay. okay. you're okay. are they hadi. >> you're okay you're okay. >> we start to walk him outside. thank god you are safe. don't be afraid. the fighter says you are free. this is the third prison they brought me to. he says the third prison after three months in a windowless cell, he can finally see the sky hello. >> hello. allah. hello. >> the light, he says. oh, god, there is light. my god, there is light. >> okay, okay okay okay. >> okay can you come here? >> you're okay. stay with me. >> stay with me. >> repeats again and again. okay. >> mike. hello. my name. >> for three months, i didn't know anything about my family. i didn't hear anything about my children. the fighter hands him something to eat. barely lift it to his mouth. >> okay. >> but his body can't handle it. >> okay. you're okay. >> his captors fled during the fall of damascus leaving him with no food or water. that was at least four days ago i'm shaking. my face is shaking, he says. the rebel tells him there's no more army, no more prisons, no more checkpoints. are you serious? he says. kiara syria is free, he tells him. it's the first time he has heard those words. he tells us his name is adel herbel and that officers from the much feared mukhabarat intelligence services took him from his home and began interrogating him about his phone. they brought me here to damascus. they asked me about names of terrorists, he says. did they hit you? the fighter asks. yes, yes, he says. adel, as a paramedic, arrives. the shock sets in there's nothing. everything's okay. the red crescent is coming to help you. this man assures him you are safe. don't be afraid anymore. everything you are afraid of is gone. hamas tens of thousands of syrians have disappeared in assad's prisons up until 15 minutes ago. adel herbel was one of them. he is still petrified. >> la al hilal. ammar. >> don't be afraid. don't be afraid. the ambulance worker reassures him. every car i got into, they blindfolded me, he says. it is the end of a very dark chapter for him and for all of syria. but so many ghosts remain. >> clear. that's just an extraordinary report. what more do you know about this man and how he ended up in the prison? >> well, we don't know that much because you can see from the report, anderson, that he's in a deep state of shock. and honestly, i don't think he understands why he was taken. and this is something that's really important for our viewers to understand about the way the regime operated with impunity, plucking people off the streets for any number of different reasons or possible offenses. you didn't have to be an activist. you didn't have to be outspoken against bashar al-assad to fall afoul of his regime and to end up in one of these dungeons. he says that they accused him of making phone calls to people who they call terrorists. again, important to remember that terrorists for them, could refer to anyone who essentially was critical of bashar al-assad or who was supportive of this uprising. and i think what it really speaks to anderson is this broader issue that we see in syria, whereby tens of thousands of ordinary people have just disappeared into these dungeons. adel was one of the lucky ones. he w his family for so many others, we don't know if they're alive and we don't know if we will ever even know with certainty whether they're alive or not where they were held, why they were held. this is a country that is grappling with question after question, anderson. >> and the look on on his face, it's just it's incredible. clarissa ward, thank you so

A heated argument broke out between President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Vice President JD Vance in the White House Oval Office. The confrontation occurred before a deal was supposed to be made between Ukraine and the United States in which Ukraine would give the U.S. critical minerals in exchange for some unspecified help in dealing with Russia's invasion. Trump and Vance accused Zelensky of being "disrespectful," ungrateful, and of gambling with starting a global war. Before the argument began, President Trump was asked by reporters if he would provide Ukraine with security guarantees, but he declined to affirmatively answer these questions. President Zelensky said Ukraine needed security guarantees and that a ceasefire would not be sufficient.
