Subject: ssh: option -l of scp (bandwidth limit) should apply to compressed data
Date: Tue, 21 Sep 2004 11:20:58 +0200
Package: ssh
Version: 1:3.8.1p1-8
Severity: normal
The -l option of scp is useful so that not all the available bandwidth
is taken by scp. Thus, when compression is enabled, it should be the
bandwidth limit on the compressed data (i.e. data that will really be
sent).
Currently, this is not the case: it is a limit on uncompressed data,
so that when option -l is used, only a small fraction of the available
bandwidth is taken (when compression is good), and transfers are much
longer than they could be (just as if compression were not used).

Hi,
according to bug #272563, perl4caml has massive problems on (at least)
powerpc. However, the latest maintainer reaction is from 21th Sept, and
the latest mail approving the problems is from 23th Sept. As we try to
release really soon, this needs to be solved.
Also, this package can't currently be removed from sarge, as meta-ocaml
depends on it. So, can you either please pick up that problem (perhaps
via a NMU), or drop some dependency in the chain meta-ocaml -> ocamldbi
-> perl4caml?
Thank you very much.
Cheers,
Andi

My Mac is broken at the moment, so I can't look into this problem.
Note that IMHO the dependency ocamldbi -> perl4caml does not need to
and should not be there. It should be a Suggests or Recommends
dependency (and that goes for all the other database-specific drivers
too).

Notice that since i was in Oldebourg, i have not really have any spare time to
look at it, which is why the delay on this. I will have a look on monday
though.

I would prefer it to be fixed though.

You sent this to #272653 by mistake. Please resend.

That's largely because I have no idea what to do about it,
unfortunately.

I believe Sven is going to look into finding the problem. I'd rather
fix it than do something like that. No NMU is necessary. If someone
finds the solution, I'm happy to apply the patch :-)
If there is no solution found, I can drop the perl4caml support from
ocamldbi. That's more correct than dropping ocamldbi from meta-ocaml.

OK, I have uploaded ocamldbi 0.9.10-2 which drops the perl4caml
dependency.
FWIW, I have found perl4caml to not really be the best tool for my needs
in the end, so if someone else wants to take it over, please contact me;
that'd be fine with me.
