Subject: gnome-shell: Still hangs, but 10 minutes or so after startup this time
Date: Sun, 13 Jan 2013 17:47:46 -0800
Package: gnome-shell
Version: 3.4.2-5
Severity: normal

I started gnome-shell 3.4.2-5 for the first time today, did what I
always do (start up a few gnome-terminal windows and iceweasel), and
about 10 minutes later, it hung. I don't know if it was exactly 10
minutes. It took me a few minutes to notice it because I wasn't doing
anything when it happened, and it didn't occur to me to look at the
clock to see what time it was frozen at. I had to "kill -9" it, and it
restarted and has been running fine for about 3 hours now.

Versions 3.4.2-3 and earlier hung at startup about 10% of the time, and
were fine after that.

If it's going to hang, I'd rather it did it right at startup so I can
deal with it then and get it over with.

Maybe I just got really unlucky. It remains to be seen how frequent
hangs like that are going to be for me. But from my point of view, the
new version hanging the first time I try it is worrisome.

I'm going to install gnome-shell-dbg now.

It hung again. It's hung 2 out of 3 times so far. I looked at the
clock this time, so I know it was 10 minutes after startup.

And I got a backtrace this time (the "$1 = 30118832" at the end is from
doing "call gjs_dumpstack ()" in gdb):

It's up to 4 hangs out of 13 startups now, all 10 minutes after startup.
The backtrace from the third hang looks the same as the one from the
second one.

In case it matters, I have 2 side by side 1920x1080 screens. The only
extension I have on is the Native Window Placement Extension.

When gnome-shell comes back after I kill it, it never seems to hang. I
might try killing it preemptively after every startup.

Don’t worry about backtraces, it comes from the first GC run.

What I wonder is why it is not reproducible, or at least not that often
(the GC hangs sometimes, this is a known bug, but it should not be all
the time). As long as we can’t understand what is specific about your
system that makes the GC deadlock most of the time, I don’t think we can
make any progress.

It was gkrellm, I think. I stopped autostarting it and am using a
system monitor gnome-shell plugin instead, and have had 0 hangs in 10
startups so far.

I might try running gkrellm after startup instead of autostarting it, to
see what happens then.

It just hung without gkrellm!

I logged in 6 times yesterday with gkrellm autostarting to see if I
could reproduce the bug again, and it wouldn't hang. I disabled gkrellm
autostarting, logged in today, and it hung.

I'm all confused now, but it's probably my own fault for changing too
many variables at once. Since I made this bug report I've started using
the Multiple Monitor Panels extension, the system-monitor extension,
switched from gnome-terminal to xterm, and used gnome-tweak-tool to show
the date in the clock.

But... I think I'll just assume the hang today was a statistical anomaly
and try to work around this by not using gkrellm (at least until I come
to my senses and go back to Xfce or something).

Hey Jason,

Could you please still reproduce this issue with newer gnome-shell version
like 3.4.2-7+deb7u1 or 3.8.4-5+b1 ?

cheers,
althaser

There have been many changes to Debian since this bug was originally
reported. If you are still experiencing this issue with Debian 12 (or
with Testing or Unstable), please report a new bug.

Thank you,
Jeremy Bícha
