This actually looks like #557960. Says it was fixed several years ago
but may need fixing again.
Inside screen (no byobu necessary, doesn't matter what $SHELL):
$ python2 /usr/share/doc/python-newt/examples/peanuts.py
Segmentation fault

I just wanted to let you know that I found this was fixed in slang2
in 2.3.0-4.
The fix is:
https://salsa.debian.org/debian/slang2/blob/debian/master/debian/patches/init-crash.patch
All but oldstable should be good, and there it might not yet been broken
(not checked).
I think you can close the bug.
