Attempting to burn a DVD-R using the same drive, media, and computer.
This attempt aborts prior to even starting the burn:

wodim: No write mode specified.
wodim: Assuming -tao mode.
wodim: Future versions of wodim may have different drive dependent defaults.
Device was not specified. Trying to find an appropriate drive...

Have you managed to use this same drive and media together with other
software at all? From the advertised profiles here, it seems that that
the drive just doesn't claim to support *writing* DVD-R, just CD-R and
CD-RW.
