建武中元（省作中元；56年四月－57年）是東漢光武帝劉秀的第二個年號，也是他的最後一個年號。共計2年。建武三十二年四月十一己卯（56年5月14日），改元建武中元。
二年二月漢明帝即位沿用，次年正月初一（58年2月13日）改元永平。
范曄《後漢書》中同時使用「建武中元」和「中元」。例如《光武帝紀》寫有「改年為中元」，而《東夷傳》則書「建武中元」。《資治通鑑》只作「中元」。司馬彪《續漢書》及沈約《宋書》皆作建武中元。而洪适《隸釋》錄《蜀郡太守何君閣道碑》，末署「建武中元二年六月」。《中國曆代年號考》推測本作建武中元，寫作「中元」可能是簡化，或者傳抄中脫漏。
辛德勇認為，「中元」是班固編纂史書時依據個人習慣對「建武中元」作的省寫，後世因襲。
