車胤，字武子。東晉南平郡（今湖南省、湖北省邊界）人。車胤曾祖車浚曾任吳國會稽太守，父親車育曾任郡主簿。相傳車胤小時候家庭貧窮，夏天夜裡只能用螢火蟲的光亮照明勤讀，「車胤囊螢」的典故源自于此。
初為桓溫從事，後為主簿、征西長史。晉孝武帝時期（373～396年），歷任中書侍郎、侍中、護軍將軍。晉安帝隆安初年 (397～401年)，為吳興太守，加輔國將軍。遷吏部尚書。
因不滿司馬元顯擅權，遭賜死。
