東晉豫章內史梅賾獻《古文尚書》五十八篇,自南宋以來,一直被懷疑是偽書,至清朝閻若璩作《尚書古文疏証》,列舉諸多論據而力証其偽,自此,《古文尚書》之偽遂成定論。
毛奇齡有所不滿,作《古文尚書冤詞》加以反駁。全書分總論、今文尚書、古文尚書、古文之冤始于朱氏、古文之冤成于吳氏、書篇題之冤、書序之冤、書詞之冤、書字之冤等十部分,專為《古文尚書》申「冤」。例如,毛奇齡斷定《道經》是對《尚書》經的尊稱,為了證明其說,他援引漢代緯書《易通卦驗》云:「燧人在伏羲前寘刻《道經》,以開三皇五帝之書。」此說過於遷強,不足以取信於一般學者。四庫館臣高度重視《尚書古文疏証》,認為毛奇齡的《古文尚書冤詞》不過是強詞奪理。
