更始（元年：23年二月 - 末年：25年九月）是新朝末年更始帝劉玄的年號，共計3年。又《越絕書》中有更始五年、六年的記載，錢培名認為有誤，但是沒有說明理由。有學者認為劉秀稱帝時全國還處在戰亂狀態，再加上當時交通不便，一些地區奉行的年號與實際情況或許不同。
地皇四年（23年）二月（王莽歷三月）綠林軍擁立劉玄為帝，年號更始，仍然稱漢。同年九月（王莽歷十月）王莽被殺，新朝滅亡。更始三年（25年）九月，赤眉軍攻入長安，劉玄逃走，使其政權滅亡。十月，投降赤眉，將璽綬送給赤眉擁立以建世作年號的皇帝劉盆子。而同年六月，劉秀稱帝，國號漢，是為東漢，年號建武。
