| 44 | 王嘉字公仲，平陵人也。以明經射策甲科為郎，坐戶殿門失闌免。察廉為南陵丞。鴻嘉中，舉敦朴能直言，召見宣室，對政事得失，超遷大中大夫。出為九江、河南太守，治甚有聲。徵入為大鴻臚，徒京兆尹，御史大夫。建平三年，為丞相，封新甫侯。後以哀帝益封董賢，嘉封上，詔書下韶獄。嘉卬天歎曰：「幸得充備宰相，不能進賢退不肖，以是負國，死有餘責。」吏問賢不肖主名，嘉曰：「賢，故丞相孔光、故大司空何武，不能進；惡，高安侯董賢父子，佞邪亂朝，而不能退。罪當死。」遂不食死。 |
