陳獻章,字公甫,廣東新會人也。身長八尺,目光如星右。臉有七黑子生之前夕,其母夢白龍入室,其光如晝。幼秉竒悟中。正統丁卯鄉試會試不第,聞江西呉與弼講學臨川,遂棄其學而學焉。丁亥,游太學祭酒邢讓試獻章和楊龜山,此日不再得詩。譲覽之,驚曰:「龜山不如也」。為揚言于朝,以為真儒復出。由是名振京師。羅倫、章懋,莊泉賀欽輩皆與游。欽時為給事中,聞獻章議論,即日解官去。獻章歸四方,學者日益眾。壬寅,以布政使彭韶、都御史朱英薦赴京師,召試吏部,辭疾不往。上疏乞歸養,授翰林檢討。上表謝,不辭而去。教人以主靜為先,或勸之著書不答。弘治庚申卒。所著有《白沙集》,同時有陳真晟,字剩夫,漳州人也。以主敬為學。嘗獻書闕下,請補正學,不報。  論曰:自薛文清公倡性理之學于河東,後臨川有呉與弼、新會有陳獻章者,皆以盛名徵薦,即其學無甚相逺要,皆有志希賢,其不失為君子儒者與?

賀欽,字克恭,遼東廣寧人也。成化丙戌進士,授給事中。聞南海陳獻章講性理之學,抗疏解官,去執弟子禮。孝皇初,以大臣薦授陜西布政司叅議,上疏懇辭,陳四事:「一曰資真儒以講聖學,謂今日急務莫先于講學,而經筵勸講之官,所謂師友之臣,尤當訪求真儒以充其任,不宜茍以俗儒廁其間。二曰薦賢才以輔治道,謂曆事監生陳獻章天性髙明,學術純正,誠當世之大賢,為士夫之矜式,宜以非常之禮起之,或任之內閣,俾叅大政,或任之經筵,使養君徳。三曰遵祖訓以處內官,謂內府監司局庫衙門之設,載之祖訓內官之條,其職掌不過洒掃供養、闗防出入等事而已,奈何?近年以來,如王振喜、寧舒良、王誠、曹吉祥、牛玉、汪直、尚銘、梁方、陳喜之輩,或陷主邊庭,身叛外境,或主易儲君,禁錮南內,或謀為不軌,賄易后妃,或邀功啟釁,流毒邊徼,或恃寵招權,納賂不貲,或引用左道,蠱惑上心,或導進淫巧,盜虛府庫,此其陷君誤國,蠧政殃民,昭昭在人耳目者也。宜深鑒已往之弊,永絕方來之禍,內不可使職掌奏牘,得預大政,外不可使鎮守地方掌握兵權。四曰興禮樂以化天下,謂陛下紹基之初,罷黜浮屠妄誕之邪術,舉行朱子喪塟之正禮,真所謂守成業而致盛治也。但初政之施,僅發其端,故頹敗之俗尚仍其舊,禮譲未行,淫穢日甚,乞申明正禮之當行,革去教坊之俗樂,則國不異政,家不殊俗,而風俗自美,民心自善矣。疏入,朝廷允其辭,而四事黜以浮泛,罷之正徳。己巳,逆瑾括民田,東人驚疑,義州民聚眾縦火劫財,城中擾亂,相戒毋驚賀,公鄉人請欽往撫之,眾皆羅拜乞生路,欽曰:渠輩既知悔,即不殺人,猶可活。鎮城有體,勘人來渠輩,但乞命,毋殺人。已而體勘人果至,須臾,人報發軍來剿,眾復呼噪相聚曰:賀君素無誑言。再往問之,欽曰:城中擾亂至此,鎮城焉得不發兵?兵雖至,爾等苐不殺人,無害也。眾唯唯,退城中,竟不傷一人。欽家居杜門,潛心理學,清脩篤行,鄉閭化之,稱曰醫閭先生。  論曰:孔子稱「言忠信,行篤敬,雖蠻貊之邦行矣」。賀公篤信力行,而鄉閭服之,卒使強悍之徒投戈革心,謂非忠信篤敬之驗乎?

陳茂烈,字時周,福建莆田人也。少喪父,補興化衛總旗。晝入公署,夜歸讀書,祖母憐其孱弱,亟止之,乃韜燈,默誦不少輟。年十八,慨然歎曰:「善學聖人者,莫如顏曽、顏之克己,曽之日省,學聖之法也」。作《省克録》以自考。弘治丙辰登進士,従陳獻章游教,以主靜作《靜思録》,授吉安府推官。政務大體。豪家利寡婦財,誣許婚,斷従守志。妻有夫死而嫁其孕妾者。既生子,歸承其業,族人爭之驗類其姊,爭者愧服。考績歸至淮,幾凍死,所知覆以敝裘救之。拜監察御史,劾罷尚書侶鍾。尋以母老乞終養,躬灌園以給,出則手執小油葢臥,破席無帷。吏部以茂烈孝養清苦,奏改為晉江教諭,資其祿,疏辭不拜。復援侍郎潘禮事例,奏給月米,制可。有司月給米三石,複具疏辭,不許。母卒,哀毀成疾,亦卒。御史王應鵬列狀以聞,詔表其宅里曰「孝亷,祀之,鄉賢恤其家。  論曰:自孝弟力,田之風微,而世之希寵祿乾榮名者,率以文藝炫,於是獨行之士不少概見於世。若陳君者,其獨行君子與?
