Newly discovered archaeological sites in the Uribe Kosta region of northern Spain are illuminatin... more Newly discovered archaeological sites in the Uribe Kosta region of northern Spain are illuminating the establishment of late prehistoric coastal farming settlements and specialised tool-production activities. The modification of settlement patterns and habitats in permanent open-air villages is traditionally linked to the Neolithic expansion in Central Europe and the Mediterranean. Archaeological research allows for the identification and study of these sites in order to understand the socioeconomic and cultural development of the earliest farmer communities. A dearth of archaeological evidence, however, hampers our interpretation of the Neolithisation of some regions, such as northern Spain. Here, research has been traditionally focused on archaeological contexts associated with caves and megalithic structures, with some limited references to Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Bronze Age open-air sites (e.g.

Las tres cuevas contienen un importante patrimonio tanto en manifestaciones de arte rupestre del Paleolítico como de grafitis de época histórica. Hacemos referencia en este trabajo a estos últimos de Lumentxa y Abittaga. Las unidades gráficas inventariadas y documentadas en este estudio abarcan un periodo cronológico desde el siglo XVIII al XX.

Estos letreros son anotaciones grabadas por los pastores desde el siglo XVIII al XXI en las formaciones de pizarras que existen en los alrededores del pueblo. Nos relatan: anecdotas, dibujos geometricos, circunstancias meteorologicas, y un detallado inventario de nombres y apellidos, con sus fechas de realizacion, que nos proporciona una interesante informacion sobre aspectos genealogicos de este territorio de enclave serrano. Nos anima a realizar este trabajo la singularidad y exclusividad de dichos letreros en toda la Sierra de la Demanda. Initially at the site successive surface findings were made, and more recently a broader knowledge of the site was obtained after the tests and excavation made there as result of a salvage intervention caused by land development processes. This work presents the archaeological materials recovered in the aforementioned archaeological action as well as the ones recovered in the successive surface prospections carried out by I. Libano from 1982 until 2009.

Cyclosporine A induced arteriolopathy in a rat model of chronic cyclosporine nephropathy. Chronic... more Cyclosporine A induced arteriolopathy in a rat model of chronic cyclosporine nephropathy. Chronic cyclosporine (CsA) nephrotoxicity is a major complication of heart, bone marrow, and renal transplantation, and is characterized in humans by striped interstitial fibrosis, tubular dilatation and atrophy, and hyalinization of hilar arterioles. This last feature is highly specific for cyclosporine injuiy and has been difficult to reproduce in normotensive animal models. Salt-depletion has been shown to sensitize rodents to the effects of CsA and accelerate the disease process. We conducted sequential studies in chronically salt depleted, pair fed rats treated with CsA (15 mg/kg, s.c.) or an equivalent dose of olive oil vehicle, and found a histologic lesion associated with CsA that consisted of striped cortical interstitial fibrosis, tubular dilatation and atrophy, and hyalinization of many afferent arterioles. The arteriolopathy was first detected at day 10 with progressive hyalinization of arterioles continuing until termination of the study at day 35. The arteriolopathy consisted initially of eosinophilic granular transformation of smooth muscle cells comprising afferent hilar glomerular arterioles, and progressed to foci of smooth muscle cell vacuolization and accumulation of discrete hyaline deposits in vessel walls. Electron microscopy demonstrated marked accumulation of typical renin granules throughout the smooth muscle cell cytoplasm, corresponding to the eosinophilic granular transformation revealed histologically. Immunocytochemistry confirmed the up-regulated production of renin in these vessels. This study documents a rodent model for CsA arteriolopathy and CsA-associated interstitial fibrosis that strikingly reproduces the most characteristic nephropathic effects of cyclosporine found in human patients treated with this agent. This model offers an opportunity to test therapeutic interventions that might block or ameliorate the most serious nephrotoxic effects of this drug. Cyclosporine (CsA) has improved organ transplantation survival markedly since its introduction by Borel et al [1], and cyclosporine-based immunosuppression has been used successfully as therapy for a number of primary renal and non-renal disease states as well. A major complication of long-term therapy is chronic CsA nephropathy, characterized by tubular vacuolization, striped cortical interstitial fibrosis, and a prominent vascular injury manifested by hyalinosis of hilar arterioles, and terminal portions of small muscular (interlobular) arteries [2]. The results show an average incision rate of the river of <0.083 mm a–1 for at least the last 419 ka, with interruptions due to sedimentary inputs. Moreover, allostratigraphic units comprising fluviokarstic deposits at the base and flowstone formation at the top have been shown to be climatically controlled, formed either during glacial–interglacial cycles or during interstadial cycles. Finally, when the cave was used by humans in the Late Magdalenian, the lower entrance was closed, and they must therefore have entered the cave through the upper entrance. Furthermore, the control of fire allowed the development of the first symbolic behavior in deep caves, around 176 ky BP. These activities would increase during the Upper Paleolithic, when lighting residues proliferated at these sites. The physical peculiarities of Paleolithic lighting resources are very poorly understood, although this is a key aspect for the study of human activity within caves and other dark contexts. In this work, we characterize the main Paleolithic lighting systems (e.g., wooden torches, portable fat lamps, and fireplaces) through empirical observations and experimental archeology in an endokarstic context. The open air chatelperronian site of Aranbaltza (Barrika, Basque Country) Se presentan los materi... more The open air chatelperronian site of Aranbaltza (Barrika, Basque Country) Se presentan los materiales procedentes de un nuevo yacimiento al aire libre localizado en la costa de Bizkaia. Éste fue localizado como resultado de unas obras de saneamiento por lo que los materiales recuperados están desprovistos de un contexto arqueológico preciso. Aun así un análisis tecnológico y tipológico ha permitido valorar la unidad del conjunto proponiendo la adscripción del grueso del material al Chatelperroniense. Este hallazgo abre nuevas posibilidades para el conocimiento sobre este periodo en la región Cantábrica ya que supondría la primera evidencia de un hábitat al aire libre semejante a los excavados en torno a Bayona.
