A volcanic island arc system was located in the Pacific Ocean with subduction occurring to the west direction.

Baja California Peninsula is the westernmost tectonic province of Mexico. The peninsula extends 1... more Baja California Peninsula is the westernmost tectonic province of Mexico. The peninsula extends 1300 km south-southeast from the US boundary to Cape San Lucas in the south. The peninsula is bounded on the east by a complex structural depression whose floor lies below sea level and deepens toward the southeast. The structural depression is the result of the displacement of the San Andreas Fault. The peninsula is divided from north to south into three morpho-tectonic sub-provinces called the Peninsular Ranges, the central region, and Southern Cape region. The poorly exposed eastern half of the Peninsular Ranges consists of the oldest rocks on the Peninsula Range consisting of weakly metamorphosed sandstone, shale, limestone, and basic volcanic rock. Fossils date the sediments from Precambrian to Triassic. The next sequence consists of younger rocks on the western Peninsula Range consisting of several thousand meters of metasedimentary and meta-volcanic rocks of Middle Cretaceous age intruded by numerous plutons. Plutons consist of tonalites, quartz diorites, granodiorites, gabbros, diorites, and adamellites. Plutons make up about 40 percent of the Baja California surface area. Post batholithic marine sedimentary sequence consisting of Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary age forms a narrow belt along the west coast.

North to northwest orientations of epithermal vein systems indicate extension occurred as early as 30 mya north of the Trans-Mexican volcanic belt. Major episodes of faulting began 24 to 23 mya and 13 to 12 mya in Mexico and the Southwester U.S. Faulting was accompanied by alkali basalts typical of intraplate rifting.

Task 1 included defining the seasonal high ground water table (SHGWT); describing methods and techniques used to determine SHGWTs; identify problems associated with estimating SHGWT conditions; summarizing results from interviewing state agencies and engineering consultants for determining how SHGWTs are determined; and, providing a preliminary data set for developing a technical procedure manual for applying various SHGWT predictive methods.

$Table 4.10. NRCS Method Probability for Achieving Predicted SHGWTs. The probability of achieving a direct match with NRCS water table range estimates fo Districts 1, 2, 4, and 5 appears to be less than 30%. For the urban setting represented b\ District 6, greater than 64% probability appears to be likely for achieving acceptable predictions using the NRCS method. Acceptable probability results appear to be nea 50% for District 7. Applying the NRCS method for use in direct correlation wit predicting seasonal high ground water measurements is low, except for the urbar setting in District 6. Caution should be exercised when attempting to assume the NRC range intervals are accurate. Field investigative methods are recommended as a mean: for validating NRCS estimates. For example, qualitative methods such as gray soi indicators, SPT density counts, and the hydraulic gradient method would be appropriate for verification purposes.$

Sedimentary processes are tied to weathering, soil formation, landscapes, the cycle of erosion, glacial impacts, mass wasting and hill slope evolution, river erosion transport and deposition, stream hydrology, and floodplain morphology. An introduction to rocks and rock classification and sedimentary transport are included. Properties of sedimentary rocks including texture and composition and sedimentary structures are contributing factors in sedimentation.
Finally, various models on sedimentary interpretation are offered which focus on the sedimentary environment, environment classification including continents, transitional , and marine environments. The publication is an introductory level treatise.
