BMC General meeting: Manchester

Minutes for the General Meeting of the British Mathematical Colloquium, Wednesday 19th June 2024, from 1630, at the Manchester BMC

  1. Attendance and apologies
The meeting was held immediately prior to the London Mathematical Society Meeting and was attended by approximately 100 attendees of the BMC and members of the Scientific Committee.
Apologies had been received from Sophie Huczynska, St Andrews (Scientific Committee member, EMS representative).
  2. Minutes of the previous meeting
The minutes of the previous General Meeting held at the Bath BMC on Tuesday 4th April 2023 were presented and accepted.
  3. Introduction The Chair of the Scientific Committee,
Jan Grabowski, introduced himself and explained the purpose of the General meeting. The Scientific Committee was also introduced to those present. Thanks were proposed to Sarah Rees, as outgoing Chair, and enthusiastically supported by all present.
  4. BMC Attendee Representative at the Scientific Committee
The Chair invited volunteers to attend the meeting of the Scientific Committee in Autumn 2024, to provide attendee feedback on the Manchester BMC. Following the meeting, David Martí-Pete (Liverpool) agreed to undertake this role.
  5. Future meetings of the BMC
Attendees were informed that the next BMC would be a joint BMC-BAMC event in Exeter, from 23rd-26th June 2025. The plenary speakers will be
    • Jon Chapman, University of Oxford, UK
    • Gianne Derks, University of Leiden, Netherlands
    • Kenneth Falconer, University of St Andrews, UK
    • Xumei Li, Imperial, UK
    • Hee Oh, Yale, USA
    • Sarah Zerbes, ETH Zurich, Switzerland
    The mini-workshops were also announced:
    • Geometry and Topology
    • Number Theory
    • Algebra
    • Dynamical Systems & Ergodic Theory
    • Mathematics of Climate and Weather
    • Formal methods in mathematical proof
Timothy Logvinenko invited the BMC to visit Cardiff in 2026 and this was approved by vigorous applause.
  6. ECR-oriented meetings
The Chair noted the BMC's long-standing tradition of advertising an ECR-oriented meeting, previously the Young Researchers in Mathematics meeting. The latter has evolved into the Early Career Researchers in Mathematics meeting and a second similar meeting now also exists, the British Early Career Mathematicians' Colloquium, organised from and held in Birmingham annually. Attendees were encouraged to support these meetings and share details when these are advertised.
  7. Thanks to the organisers of the Manchester BMC
The Chair in-vited attendees to show their appreciation of the Organising and Scientific Committees of the Manchester BMC, along with all who had contributed to the event.
