When you say "today's world" I think you mean "today's U.S.A"... The rest of the world, doesn't seem to have as crazy anti-hacking laws, as the US.

Germany is pretty harsh too. If I remember correctly you can't even have "hacking tools."

Many countries have pretty aggressive anti-hacking laws. The UK, for instance, has a very similar piece of legislation that in theory makes URL manipulation illegal.

Javascript is the only language you can run on the browser (Dart doesn't change that).

So if Javascript is "GOTO" then dart is: "function NotGoTo() { GOTO; }"

What are you talking about? Please clarify your position.

In cultures where female circumcision occurs, it's not the men who perform the circumcision, it's the women. And it's women who shame anyone who has not been mutilated in the same way they have been.

I don't know if this is a case of Oslo syndrome, but this kind of peer pressure plays a big role in keeping people down.

The same thing (though probably not quite as harmful) happens with men. Men aren't all supportive of men finding their own way either. If you don't do and like the same stupid things your peers feel forced to do and like, you get ridiculed.

Women's magazines ignore technology and demean women

The editors of these titles are disporportionately Women.

... so you might of (very badly) shown that some woman are mildly mysoginist (if even that)... How do you get "worst mysoginists" and "often" out of that?

Insecurities, eg body image, are propogated to support the beauty and fashion industry. Just one example. Others (studies and simple empirical checks) will also corroborate this. It shouldn't be controversial, but YMMV.

Quoting TFA does not clarify your position at all. "Often" implies women outside of the editorial staff of these magazines. And I fail to see how they are "the worst mysoginists[sic]."

Please clarify.

MarissaTV, the Yahoo Q3 News — If It Bleeds, It Definitely Does Not Lead

__________

But this is far from atypical, as a little google-fu whill show you. And if you look into some research, some additional things will emerge: eg What attracts the media to woman-on-woman (WOW) bullying is the fact that women are targeted at a higher rate by female bullies (71%) than by male bullies (46%). I won't belabor the point. Merely pointing out an empirical irony relevant to the headline and the context of this discussion. This is not counterfactual (nor apologetic) to other types of bad behabiour, but it is oddly not widely understood (it appears).

How is providing evidence to your claims "[belaboring] the point"? I know it's easier to vomit a seven-word sound bite, but don't patronize me with a bunch of dismissive hand waving and "find it for yourself on google." You said it, now back it up.

When you make a statement like that on a place like this I expect you to do your homework before you click the comment button. You do us all a disservice by making a ludicrous claim and then backing away from it, because it encourages others to pander anecdote as fact.

You're now arguing from ignorance. I've provided you three examples: (1) Editors at fashion magazines; (2) a High-profile technology editor; and (3) Some research with quantification.

Since this topic starts to bleed into the HN-no-go-zone ("women in tech"), its worth not "belaboring the point" because that soon tends to lead into a meaningless debate[0]. If you have some contra-evidence or a counter-factual to put forward, it would be interesting to see it. But seriously, I don't need to do your homework for you. If you don't have something to show, arguing "i don't understand" or "i don't see it" is dis-ingenuous.

________

[0] This is a distinct topic to the more-common flame-wars around Women's STEM aptitude and/or promotion potenial.

There are countries where woman cannot choose who they marry. Where woman are beaten, Where woman are not allow outside on their own, where woman earn double digit percentages less than male counterparts... You are seriously saying that 'often' the 'worst' mysoginists are woman in the magazine industry!?

And then claiming others are arguing from ignorance. LOL.

You seem to be having a comprehension problem with the English language. Its probaly better for you to study the definition and history of the word than for HN to lectur you or try to enlighten you. In addition to the word 'misogeny', you might also do well to study the phrase 'argument from ignorance', which I referred to above. The logical construct 'some of the worst' also seems to be mis-understood. Because there is a reasonably large number of people on HN that speak English as a second language there's no point in continuing this sort of debate. Because ultimately, you seem to be basing your line of attack on false premises. I will, however, limit my remarks for brevity to the case of misogeny in the western english speaking world. (One could extend the argument, but its not neccessary to support my earlier point.).

(1) Definitions: Misogyny is manifested in many different ways, from jokes to pornography to violence to the self-contempt women may be taught to feel toward their own bodies."

(2) Its clear from (1) That the media and workplace bullying are included in the definition.

(3) Its clear from the construct of 'many of the worst', that this refers to a non-trivial number, but need not be exclusive. So, the verbal threshold means 'many but not neccessarily all, and in any event not amount we need to further specify or approximate in specific percentages'. But, for the sake of it. The data I reference earlier implied that despite the higher proportion of total 'work bullies' in the workplace being men, a woman is as likely to be bullied at work by a woman. So, from the perspective of women, this is indeed a non-trivial amount. We can be reasonably say then that the 'some of the worst' bullies are other women, because this makes up half of the pool.

I think first and foremost - relax.

You are ignoring severity of misogyny, and instead referring to number of misogynists. Correct?

I'm saying, magazine (female or male) editors are by far not the worst, nor that common, among the TOTAL population of misogynists.

But by all means go and fight the "misogynist female magazine editor" fight... I'm sure it's worthy.

But lay off the ad hominem attacks, they just make you look like a jerk. (See what I did there ;) )

Its a more generalized trend, not some sort of special interest thing. I was merely pointing it out in my first comment. Later examples are just repsonding to specific queries. This sample was published in the NYT today, and it re-iterates many of the same points. In particular, read the last sentence...

studies have shown that the more attractive an adolescent girl or woman is, the more likely she is to become a target for indirect aggression from her female peers.

“Women are indeed very capable of aggressing against others, especially women they perceive as rivals,” said Dr. Vaillancourt, now a psychologist at the University of Ottawa. “The research also shows that suppression of female sexuality is by women, not necessarily by men.”

How about we break the whole world into false dichotomies.

What's more important, saving children or commenting on HN? Choice made (Commenting on HN), you wrote that comment, rather than saved a child.

What's more important, curing cancer, or eating something? Choice made (eating something)... why didn't you cure cancer instead!?

I think I'm going to save this one. I think there is a T-shirt in there somewhere, something like on the front "Get dressed or Cure Cancer?" on the front and "Damn, guess I'll have to Cure Cancer tomorrow." on the back :-)

> (unless you changed the default config).

Lamest argument ever... Are you suggesting that the majority of postgres (say) installs are running default config with no changes? Or even better, Oracle?

I'm running multiple postgres installs (albeit small ones) in the default config.

Also, the default config of most databases is very conservative: You won't get speed, but you will get safety and it'll run on whatever hardware you throw at it.

Mongo on the other hand came with unsafe defaults and no obvious warning for people to change it. Additionally, after fixing the configuration, you would lose a lot of performance to the point of it being impractical to run mongo in a safe configuration.

Majority of installs or majority of transactions across all installs? I suspect that the majority of installs are indeed running default configuration, or at least close enough to default that the user wouldn't have looked closely enough to spot the kind of configuration issue being discussed.

Larger installs, which probably do account for the bulk of transactions, are more likely to have been tuned for speed, although probably keeping all of the safety settings at (or above) their defaults. But part of the point here is that in a safe configuration Mongo makes things slower than default.

In Australia, they have a similar 'Rememberence Day' as well as a bigger "ANZAC Day".

In the ANZAC instance, they pay respect to all sides of the specific conflicts (Gallipoli being the main one) Australian, British, New Zealand, and Turkish.

I doubt (though don't know for sure) Remembrance day in Britain is not intended for ALL soldiers...

So people who bought iphones and macs just didn't understand the options available to them through linux? I seriously doubt that premise.

I think that many tech people use apple because its what they think hip techies use and that is what they want to be. Its a brand, and image. Apple also has an aesthetic that many people like. I'm not saying people don't have a right to make up their own mind, but I have a right to think they are choosing wrongly.

But then how do we know you aren't just making this statement up?

Which would you find more important: protecting your ~$5mil business or proving to anonymous people on the internet you're not lying? Food for thought.

If you're not going to back up your claim, why tell people you're making $5mil at all?

Just a day ago, there was a topic of people sharing their earnings. Half of them preferred to stay anonymous for the same reason.

Why not rant over them, but only this guy who simply pointed out, that HN is not useless for marketing the product.

Except the largest country (by population) in the world is a product of that line of thinking.. So where is the "internal turmoil brings it down" happening?

China is not communist though, it's state capitalism.

China is also not internally very harmonious, which is why the Chinese military is focused mostly inward rather than outward.

State capitalism... you really want to go down the rabbit hole of language semantics.

So it's capitalism where all the money goes to the state, which is the government, which is the people... which is exactly what "communism" is. If you think of a "commune" as a "corporation", then it's almost identical.

I'd be happy to see the arguement, that they are a pretty bad communist state, and they don't allocate their money too well, and they (like every other country) have problems with corruption. But "they are not communist" is just as valid as "the US is not a democracy" (Technically it's kind of true, but it isn't useful as a discussion point).

My point is, Communism is pretty much just as popular as democracy... so saying it's died, is just being ignorant.

> So it's capitalism where all the money goes to the state, which is the government, which is the people... which is exactly what "communism" is. If you think of a "commune" as a "corporation", then it's almost identical.

Not it's not.

It's called state capitalism because the state interferes directly on the market, instead of abolishing corporations and capital. It's a different kind of regime, that allows China to be inserted in a free market world without making the communist party lose control of the country.

So you have a new name for a communist country... That doesn't change the fact the old one exists still...

So I can say: America isn't a democracy, because it's an oligarchy. (This statement isn't true, but is equivalent to yours).

China achieves it's communism, through state capitalism... Or is that not a true scotsman... I mean communist?

Communism hasn't died, Chinese officials still study Marx and Mao, and it is well and truly part of the Chinese propaganda message. There is still a large picture of Mao hanging in Beijing, and the leaders constantly profess to be Marxists...

But of course, how could I think that communism is still alive!?

State corporatism.

No, the preferences can be controlled (marketing), or even forced (addiction).

No one ever thought "I need coca-cola", it was a created "want" invented purely through marketing and addiction...
