I just moved to Seattle after being in New Orleans for about a month and I already miss nola. There’s really nothing else like it in America. I’m especially missing the cheap public transit and good dive bars, Seattle is lacking with both of those things

If only the cheap public transit was reliable and punctual. It is amusing when the bus driver stops and gets out to buy crawfish though.

it’s all part of the experience lol. I’d imagine I’d stop finding these quirks amusing pretty quickly if I actually lived there and got over the honeymoon phase. Also the self affirmation messages they play on the buses were kinda surreal the first time I heard them after a long night on bourbon street

Believe me I’ve heard locals and visitors cursing the message out

They did that in SF (Mission District) when I lived there, too (not crawfish, but ice cream or such).

I’d imagine mostly due to a lack of incentive on microsoft’s part. Like minecraft is literally the biggest video game to ever exist with, making 2 entirely separate code bases work while keeping all the features the same and preserving compatibility with over a decades worth of mods just so the mostly separate java and bedrock communities can play with each other is just not worth the risk. So many people play minecraft in so many different ways means that making even minor changes in gameplay can be huge sources of controversy, let alone major infrastructure changes.

There was a pretty great article a few years ago about the downfall of 23andMe (I think it was in The Atlantic), but basically they ran through all of their potential customers within a few years. It turns out that when your entire business is sequencing someone’s dna it’s hard to get repeat customers. They tried to pivot to a subscription model where they would give health advice based on your genetic sequence, but it turns out that most health information you can glean from a dna is suspect at best and next to useless most of the time.

tysm for contributing to standard ebooks, one of my favorite things on the whole internet

I used to hold the same opinion as you, but since getting a m2 air I’ve really enjoyed how thin and light it is. It really is a noticeable quality of life improvement. Once you have a decent stockpile of usb c cables the port thing isn’t really an issue anyways

Just when I thought I’d seen it all...

Thank you for sharing this!

Thank you for sharing this short story. I read it with my coffee and really enjoyed it, turns out existential dread goes well with the first hit of caffeine of the day. You made my morning :)

You're very welcome!

My experience with a prius in the north east was that it wasn't particularly bad in ice and snow and the few times I got caught in snowstorms it handled about as well as any front wheel drive car. I certainly wouldn't go out into a snowstorm with it if I had the choice, but thats true of almost any non-awd drive. The windshield defrosting situation was also a non issue for me.

Man I miss my prius, I sold it when gas was under $2...

Agreed. I still have a 2008, and it has gotten me through a couple nor'easters. Even with the original Goodyear Integrity tires. One of them was on the rolling hills of I-90 and I-84 through western Massachusetts and Connecticut. On every uphill portion I'd pass people who had gotten stuck, until I finally reached a place to stop for the night and wait out the storm. The front wheel drive seems to make it better than a lot of other cars out there. Put some CrossClimate2 tires on it, and it would be even better.

thanks for the gift link :)
