Fellow Rails developer in Japan here. I gotta say, if you're looking for a native Japanese speaker, then you are looking for a Japanese developer. This seems the wrong site to advertise on :-P. Maybe try posting on daijob.com or something. As nandemo pointed out, and also from my experience, very few devs are fluent in both languages. You'll have to relax one, if not both, of those restrictions.

I was also curious about posting a position for a Japanese developer on a mainly western site (HackerNews).

I am fluent in English (native level) and work entirely in Japanese at a Japanese company. I however have a job, live in Nagoya and am not ethnically Japanese.

I was also curious about the requirements saying that the applicant needs to be a developer, have large-scale data experience and be good with customers.

So you (the OP) need a native level english speaking Japanese person with design and programming abilities who can also manage large amounts of data and can also sell the product.

I wish I knew where that person lived!

I actually know a fair number of Japanese people who read this site so was assuming there are more. I also know quite a few westerners living in Tokyo who speak excellent Japanese with the ability to communicate well in business.

But I agree with your overall point - native level in either language is not necessary but we are looking for someone who can deal with Japanese customers, code and communicate well with the rest of us. I'll update the docs.

Agreed. I left out a comment about the number of people who actually satisfy those reqs. :)

Hey, I'm a dev in Tokyo, looking to move to Shanghai. I would have preferred to email you, but the email in your profile is quite difficult to parse. My email is in my profile ;-).

Cool, I used to live in Kyoto before moving to Shanghai...

Your email is not in your profile (the email field is kept private, you need to add your email to your about section...)

Squiggly sign means @.. Just want to prevent spammers from harvesting my email...

I'm pretty sure that "squiggly sign" refers to @. :)

Oh, hadn't realized that it wouldn't be obvious :-)

I used to trade Forex (had a small startup). I'm looking to get back into the game. Currently working on a few algorithms that I'd like to test out, soon. I'd love to bounce some ideas around with you. Email is in my profile!

I've been tinkering with Forex at eToro. I can see ALOT of potential there, I would also like to chat about it with you as well. I will contact you shortly.

Nice one! Detroiters should get the reference. Ahh, not surprised one bit. That place is where I was raised, but alas, I was a part of that mass exodus. Besides family (and some awesome Mexican food), I don't miss the city one bit.

There is NOTHING in Detroit. NOTHING! It's as depressing as it is telling. I feel this exodus is a vicious cycle that won't stop anytime soon. No one is there, hence no new money is being invested, thus more people move...ad infinitum.

The primary culture of the youth (read: thugs) isn't helping one bit either -- they tend to get more dangerous and erratic each year.

If you have any questions about growing up in Detroit, feel free to ask!

I'm from Michgan as well, and have a lot of family in the greater Detroit area. The sense of despair that most people in the area feel is just awful. After the auto plants started to close up, people just started packing up in hopes of finding work elsewhere. Some moved in-state, but most make the flight south and west (warmer weather, more jobs). I was recently in Dearborn for a wedding, and the number of empty & foreclosed houses is just staggering.

Yeah, it's pretty wild. And Dearborn is one of the "better" areas. Some parts of the city look like scenes from a Mad Max film. Everything is either foreclosed, empty, or burned.

You know, someone with a little money in their pocket come buy up half of the Detroit area; however, what would they do with it?

Here's a question: how the hell did you get awesome Mexican food that far away from Mexico? I hear people from Texas and California talk about awesome Mexican food, but never Detroit.

Haha, yeah, it seems surprising at first, but Detroit has a HUGE Mexican and Hispanic population. Also (and due to) we have Mexican Town -- check your English at the door! Whatever you're in the mood for (flautas, tostadas, chorizo), you can find it there.

Note: I've been in Japan for 3 years now, and it's nigh impossible to find decent Mexican/Tex-Mex :-( ...

When I was living in Washington State, I was told that there were entire towns of Spanish speakers which were not listed on maps. Social Workers and local/county government people knew where they were, but a mainstream citizen could spend their entire life unaware of their existence. (I heard about them because I did some volunteer work with the county.)

Not surprising. I guess it happens everywhere. Out here, you visit some obscure town, and as you get off the train, you realize everyone is speaking Korean or Mandarin. I guess it's a combination of family moving near family, and friends moving near friends (sometimes coupled with political ties -- e.g. the Hmong population in Minnesota). All of a sudden, you have an ethnically homogenous city in a foreign (to them, historically) country.

I suspect the Hispanic towns in Washington are also driven by cost of living. As I understand it, they are located out in the middle of nowhere. But my knowledge dates from 1992, so this may no longer be true.

As a black American, I'm glad they didn't use the term African-American. It's insulting. While I love the African people, many (if not most) blacks in America have no African ties (at least not for the past few centuries). It's just PC nonsense and a gross misnomer.

Then how about they use Black-American? The article is not about blacks in general, it's about black people within the U.S.

Then all would have been well. ;-)

How is it insulting? It just references past ties. Would someone with an Irish heritage be insulted by being called Irish American? I don't care if someone calls me Black or African American or even Black American. If you have a preference, then that's fine. I just found it weird to be insulted by it.

Yes, it references past ties. But how far back should we go? Most blacks in America are here by way of slavery, which happened over 200 years ago. As metamemetics said, if we go back far enough, hell, everyone is African.

Another reason is that the Black-American (due slavery) people have become genetically distinct from their west African ancestors. Many of us have a significant percentage of non-African genetics, through inter-marriage and other happenings. If we want to reference past ties, then why ignore that?

Black-Americans (due slavery) have been here since there was an America, so no need to create the distinction of an African American. The term is meaningless.

A few years ago, when Rotten Tomatoes began, it was beautiful in its simplicity. Now it's a bloated slow-loading mess. Just a few days ago, I was looking for a simple b.s. free site like this--and here it is!

Agree about how Rotten Tomatoes lost its way. But Metacritic does a very good, clean quick aggregation of movie, TV, and game reviews:

I'm no master of women psychology; however, I have spoken to many about what they desire. From what I gather, when they tell you this "lie", they actually believe those words. As far as why the lie exists to begin with, well it all boils down to saving face. Women have to keep up their social status, lest they fall victim to the double standard of being labeled a "slut", while a men who is true about his desires (and acts on them successfully) is called a "playboy" -- with obvious differences in the connotation. I won't say too much here, but message me, and I can go more in depth.

The 7-11 system is quite similar to the payment system for most things (specifically utilities) in Japan. I pay nearly all my debts (in cash) via a scan-able bill at a combini (convenience store). At first it seems weird, but after awhile, you wonder how you lived without it. This service could be very interesting, and profitable. It's gonna open the floodgates to many similar services.

That seems a lot less convenient than just making an online money transfer. When I need to pay a paper bill, I log in to my bank's web site, type in three numbers from the bill (account #, reference #, amount of €) and click "send".

I'm in! Email is in the profile!

I'm raising a high content wolf hybrid and a Shiba-ken. I can see the plight you speak of daily. However, the strange thing is that it affects my dog more than it does my wolf. During their walks, the little Shiba just wants to run wild, play with everyone, and generally explore his world. The wolf just wants to run to every shadowy corner he finds, and generally avoids people. He is happiest when back home.

A strange thing I've noticed is that, while at home, both of the animals behave as though they were the same species. Only when outdoors, do the differences become pronounced.

It's interesting having both these guys, I can easily identify which traits of the wolf have been suppressed, and which have been amplified.
