New York City bagel shop Black Seed is closing its almost 10-year-old East Village ___location this weekend. Its last day at 176 First Avenue, between East 11th and 10th streets, is Sunday, May 4. Co-owner Matt Kliegman explains that this Black Seed had to close because the lease was ending and the business didn’t need its big space anymore, as reported by EV Grieve.
Black Seed co-owners Kliegman and Noah Bernamoff opened their bagelry focusing on wood-fired Montreal-meets-New York style bagels in 2014 in Nolita, taking over what had been longtime Italian bakery De Robertis. They expanded into the East Village in 2015. Black Seed has nine other shops n New York, plus, it’s opening another one in Long Island City in May.
New Balkan coffee shop debuts in Brooklyn
A new cafe taking its cues from coffee shops of Balkan country Montenegro opened in Brooklyn earlier this spring, as reported by Greenpointers. Montemug Coffee opened in Greenpoint at 387 Manhattan Avenue, near Frost Street, on March 29. Co-owners Sladjana and Ivan run barbershop Monteman Barber just a block away. “We wanted to bring a dash of coffee culture from back home, where people truly enjoy their time spent sipping coffee,” the two told the blog. The cafe also features coffee and French and Italian pastries.
