Chappell Roan Says Her Personal Style Is 'Modest' Now but She Used to Wear 'Boob Inserts' and NSFW Outfits

There's a deeper story behind Chappell Roan's style evolution.

In an interview on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy podcast released on March 26, the "Giver" singer, 27, opened up about how being in the limelight has dimmed her outlook on personal style.

"I'm very modest when I it comes to my day-to-day. I think it's just because, one, I feel like I'm in L.A. and I can dress more masculine and not get dirty looks. But I feel like in other parts of the country, I dress more feminine... I don't wanna deal with [comments]," she said.

Cooper resonated, adding that sometimes it's easier to "blend in" rather than be scrutinized by the public.

That's when Roan (whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz) admitted that she used to dress "f---ing crazy," before she was catapulted into the public eye.

"Before all of this [fame] happened and I had energy and light in my eyes, I would literally just wear my thong out, miniskirt, bottom ass cheeks out. Nipples see through...I dressed, like, really, really bimbo-y," she explained. "I wore silicone boob inserts to make my boobs come up to my f---ing clavicle. So, I just, lost my shine because it became my job. And then I was like, I'm f---ing tired."

She continued, sharing that she used to enjoy casually doing her makeup in her room for hours over a TikTok livestream. "I would go out in this insane drag makeup and all these thrifted seventies disco [glam], always in f---ing heels, just [being] maximalist, and that was so amazing. Then it just got to be... there was no separation."

"I would be out as Kayleigh in that, and then I would be on stage as that. There was no separation. It just got I would look at myself in the mirror and be like, what's the difference between Chappell and [Kayleigh]."

Since her rise to stardom with her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess — which earned the artist three Grammy nominations and one win for best new artist — Roan's bold outfit choices, as much as her discography, have become a part if her pop star DNA.

In her conversation with Cooper, Roan also revealed just how much goes into her drag-inspired performance costumes. Her Statue of Liberty cosplay for the 2024 Governors Ball, for example, involved tons of green body paint that proved difficult to apply — and scrub off after.

"I had to spread my cheeks... I just spread my cheeks and get sprayed with green," she revealed. . "The way I got that off was I took three baths, not soap, dish soap. I literally poured dish soap in and scrubbed rubbed my whole body with coconut oil, jumped in, scrubbed with a literal, like, kitchen sponge." She even had to rigorously wash her bikini line. The makeup left a green tint on her body for days.

Roan recently showed off her daring glamour at Paris Fashion Week, where, despite a small wardrobe blip, she rocked multiple avant-garde looks and her signature white face makeup. She previously attended the 2025 Grammys in a dreamy 2003 Jean Paul Gaultier dress ball gown before changing into a medieval getup for her performance.
