preCalculus 2017-2018: Introductory Calculus Boot Camp! (May)

preCalculus 2017-2018:
Introductory Calculus Boot Camp!
(May)

Intro Calculus Units 2-3-5 ScreenCasts

Just as we started the school year in preCalculus with an 8 week Boot Camp about Trigonometry, we are ending the year with an 8 week Boot Camp on Introductory Calculus! I say 8 weeks because I'm including our last chapter in preCalculus, namely Rational Functions in Chapter 3, as the beginnings of our discussions of Limits at a Point (Removable Discontinuities) and Limits at Infinity (Horizontal Asymptotes).

Then I give a brief overview of the important concepts of Calculus: UNIT02 Limits, UNIT03 Derivatives and UNIT05 AntiDerivatives spending 2 weeks on each. We will likely finish all this right before Memorial Day. After Memorial Day we start Final Review!

preCalculus 2017-2018: Functions, Functions and More Functions! (March)

preCalculus 2017-2018:
Functions, Functions and More Functions!
(March)

Chapters 5-4-3 ScreenCasts

Chapter 5 was all about solving equations using Inverse Functions. We focused on Logarithmic and Exponential Functions even though we've done this topic with Inverse Trig Functions in the past.

Chapter 4 was all about polynomial functions. We talked about solving by factoring using The Fundamental Theorem Of Algebra, The Rational Roots Theorem and The Remainder Theorem.

We are currently finishing Chapter 3. This chapter starts with Power Functions, Quadratics and Cubics. After Easter Break, we finish the chapter and the Quarter III with Rational Functions. We're starting our final unit introducing Calculus soon!

preCalculus 2017-2018: Conic Sections! (February)

preCalculus 2017-2018:
Conic Sections!
(February)

Chapter 10 ScreenCasts

Chapter 10 was all about Conic Sections. First we learned about how to graph Conic Sections on the Cartesian Plane when the graph has horizontal or vertical symmetry:
Ax^2+Cy^2+Dx+Ey+F=0.

Then we talked about using Polar Coordinates to graph rotations:
Ax^2+Bxy+Cy^2+Dx+Ey+F=0, B!=0.

We also had fun with several applications: Parabolic Satelite Dishes, Elliptical Orbits and Whisper Galleries plus LORAN: LOng RANge Hyperbolic Navigation and Radar Systems!

preCalculus 2017-2018: Matrix Algebra! (January)

preCalculus 2017-2018:
Matrix Algebra!
(January)

Chapter 11 ScreenCasts

Chapter 11 was all about Matrix Operations and Matrix Algebra. First we talked about solving 2D and 3D Linear Systems Of Equations using Augmented Matrices and Gauss-Jordan Elimination. Then we worked on Cramer's Rule With Determinants and we set up Matrix Equations to solve with Inverse Matrices! We even solved non-Linear 2D Systems and then we worked on Linear Programming a la John Nash's Min-Max Theorem!

preCalculus 2017-2018: Vector and Polar Notation! (December)

preCalculus 2017-2018:
Vector and Polar Notation!
(December)

Chapter 9 ScreenCasts

Chapter 9 was all about Vector and Polar Notation. First we talked about Complex Number arithmetic on the Complex Plane depicting Complex Numbers as Vectors with a Direction (theta=arctan(y/x)) and Magnitude (r=sqrt(x^2+y^2)). We also converted from Polar to Cartesian forms (x=r*cos(theta), y=r*sin(theta)). We played around with CIS(theta) notation, DeMoivre's Theorem and even touched on Euler's Trig Identity!

Then we extended our understanding of Complex Vectors to Vector Sums, Vector Differences and Dilating a Vector by a Scalar. Finally we talked about the differences and applications of the Scalar Dot Product and the Vector Cross Product. We even talked about Orthogonality and the Triple Scalar Product!

preCalculus 2017-2018: Laws Of Sines and Cosines (November)

preCalculus 2017-2018:
Laws Of Sines and Cosines
(November)

Chapter 8 ScreenCasts

Chapter 8 was all about Applications Of Trigonometry. First we solved Right Triangle using Pythagoras and SOHCAHTOA. Then we solved nonRight Triangles using the Laws Of Sines and Cosines. We even calculated triangular areas using Heron's Formula! We found that Law Of Cosines is great for SSS and SAS problems. Other cases used the Law Of Sines. Watch out for that Ambiguous Case! We had fun applying our advanced trigonometry to real world data and word problems. We even tackled Harmonic Motion and Sinusoidal Regression!
