Raymond, Count of Barcelona:
Grant of a Tithe of the Tolls of Barcelona, 1132
Tithes were sometimes levied on tolls taken from ships and goods entering or leaving
a port. They could be given as fiefs or transferred in perpetuity in such circumstances.
In the name of our Lord and Redeemer, I, Raymond, by the grace of God, Count and
Marquis of Barcelona and Provence, after much deliberation and being now in an agreeable
state of mind, do give to God and to the see of St. Cross and St. Eulalie, now in the
possession of Ollegar, the Archbishop, as penance for my sins and for the salvation of my
soul and of the souls of my parents, a complete tithe of all the taxes and customs, which
I am accustomed to have, and which my son will have through me or my ancestors, from every
ship coming into, leaving, or passing through Barcelona. Indeed the see of Barcelona shall
have that tithe forever, without diminution or bribery by any man. Moreover, it may not be
given as a fief, but it shall always be held by the see itself in memory of me.
If any one should attempt to destroy this gift, which I make for the salvation of my
soul, may God drive him out from His Kingdom, until the sacrilegious one reforms. And may
God grant me what is well-merited for my good intention.
Done on the ninth of July in the twenty-third year of the reign of King Louis.
