Inquest of Sheriffs Regarding the Forests, 1170
C.8. Let there be an inquiry as to what and how much the foresters or their
bailiffs or servants received after the completion of their term of office, in what way
they received it, and upon what occasion: and if they have pardoned any one for any
offense against the rights of the king out of consideration of reward, promise, or
friendship of some kind. And let there be an inquiry into trespasses of the forests; of
those who trespass on their forests and upon the deer, hinds, and other wild beasts; and
let them write down carefully what they find out; and if the foresters or bailiffs seized
any one, arrested him, or by surety or pledge detained him, and afterwards let him go of
their own accord and without judgment, then let there be inquiry about those who have done
these things and let the result be written down.
