Englebert, Lord of Engien:
A Grant of Free Roads, 1210
Land granted in free alms (frankalmoign) was to be held without obligation of
military service or suit of court. In this instance no condition is stated.
I, Englebert, Lord of Engien, make known to all men, both present and future, that
Wichard, knight of Causines, my vassal, has declared in my presence, and in the presence
of my vassals, and has acknowledged that he has given in free tenure to the church of Our
Lady of Camberon a certain road through his land, which he holds as a fief from me, from
the Marche river as far as Five Oaks, to be possessed in perpetual right.
Be it likewise known that Michael of Causines held certain land on the same road in
fief from the said Wichard, and he likewise in my presence, and with the consent of
Wichard, has given to the said brothers of Camberon a free road over the same land to be
held forever in free alms. And this donation, so piously made, I am bound to guarantee in
all respects, and I have thought fit to confirm this document with my seal, and I have
caused the names of those who were present to be added as well as those of other faithful
people. Witnesses: Egidius of Braisne, etc.... priests. Done in the year of the
Incarnation of the Lord, 1210.
