Ratio makes some of my favorite automatic coffee brewers on the market. (It’s between them and Moccamaster and that comes down to aesthetics more than anything.) I even included the Ratio Six in my most recent holiday gift guide for coffee nerds. It’s kind of that perfect middle both in terms of size and price between the Four and the Eight.
The Ratio Six is the one I use at home when we have company over and I love it. But if money wasn’t part of the equation, then I’d have the Eight, hands down. And now, Ratio is upping the ante on the Eight. Introducing Series Two, the next generation of the Ratio Eight that stays true to form.
Officially released today, May 23rd, the Ratio Eight Series Two builds on the distinctive silhouette of the original. The modern design, the rich walnut paneling, the matte finish, the simplicity of a one-button interface, it’s all still there. But the Series Two also brings a host of changes, the most significant coming via the brew basket and carafe
The original Eight incorporated the brew basket and carafe into a single element and was designed to be used with conical, Chemex filters. The Series Two, though, features a standalone handblown borosilicate—with a smoky glass to boot—and a new double-wall stainless steel flat bottom brew basket. An upgraded thermal carafe is also available.
The Series Two also features two different recipe options, one for a half pot and one for a full, which can be selected toggled between based on how long you press the button.
The other major development of note is the price. The Series Two has actually gone down in price from the original, by $100. The Series Two is set to retail at $799 ($100 more if you want the thermal carafe), and Ratio is currently offering it at 20% off, or $639, for anyone who pre-orders. They are scheduled to being shipping out in September.
So if you’re looking to bring a little style to your automatic coffee maker, and your aesthetic is more modern than mid-century, the Ratio Eight Series Two may be just the ticket. For more information, or to pre-order you own, visit Ratio’s official website.
