Conscious Classroom Management is a delightfully rich text that incorporates meaningful stories, insights, humor, and invaluable strategies for what really works in the classroom. And while classroom management is the primary factor behind how successful teachers can achieve sustained student learning, this wonderful text also addresses the human elements of teaching, focusing on three primary subjects: the students, the teacher, and the relationship between the two.
Comprehensive and practical, Conscious Classroom Management helps teachers to:
- Eliminate power struggles with your most challenging students
- Discover how holding your ground can help students cooperate
- Uncover your teacher presence while reducing stress
- Create lessons that help students remain focused, eager, and willing to learn
- Appreciate your craft at a deeper level
- Think ahead and prepare to teach

For the novice, first-year teacher to the veteran, classroom-tested teacher, classroom management is the most critical factor for sustained student learning. And eliminating the cycle of student misbehavior is the cornerstone for effective classroom management.

About the author

My introduction to Christianity began in 1973 during the Jesus Movement, when I was invited to Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, CA. There was great music and bible teaching, but my focus eventually faded away.
After serving in the military, I returned to Calvary Chapel to reconnect with God, and over the years tried to balance what I want, with what God wants, which has not been easy. I'm kind of stubborn, so it took a long time to acknowledge that I can't do everything by self-help, so I decided to write a book for my own edification, and anyone else interested in how self-help books compare to what the bible teaches. It's called Self-Help or God's Book.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2020I am preparing for my first year of teaching. I have read two books by Harry and Rosemary Wong (The First Days of School and The Classroom Management Book). In addition, I have purchased the video series "The Effective Teacher" by Harry Wong. I am happy that I found the book Conscious Classroom Management because it offers great information. The book offers practical examples and strategies to implement in the classroom while encouraging teachers to avoid negative assumptions about students. My favorite surprise was accessing the Online Toolbox by using the code at the end of the book. This allowed me to access further resources such as lesson plans to implement procedures. Great book for new teachers who are looking to prepare for a successful first year of teaching.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2017What I liked most about Smith's Conscious Classroom Management book was that he stated what most of these books overlook, what is silently, put in place in a well managed classroom. I've taught for 18 years and I've read them all. They tell you about rules and consequences but they don't mention why teachers struggle with control. Smith says it outright, "Don't be apologetic about having authority," And "students are trying to learn the appropriate behavior; they need the teacher to show them what it looks like" That sentence alone allows educators to take a deep breath and start all over again. What good does it do to punish an already angry kid? But to be allowed to assume this is a kid who needs reminding, gives both teacher and student a chance to start over. This book gave me hope when I was ready to give up! Read it; read it again; live it and then share it with someone else.American Family: A Novel

- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2018I read this for a college class for bachelor's degree holders who are seeking an alternative teaching certificate. I plan to teach high school and felt not every suggestion was appropriate for high school, some of it is too babyish. The entire book has a cheerful, upbeat tone and views teaching through rose colored glasses to the point where I felt it was not realistic and probabaly not honest (based on what teachers I know are telling me). When I finished reading this with the class and doing activities to put this information into use I felt I needed more information and more help. I added on another class that really helped that blended behavioral information about brain science with psychology and with options for classroom rules, expectations, discipline and other general classroom management which was a huge help. I am on the lookout for more books and just ordered Harry Wong's The First Year of Teaching. Conscious Classroom Managment is very easy to read, possibly a middle school reading level and it's a fast read. Rating 4 stars = Like It.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2017I really wished I had this book several years ago when I started teaching because it could of saved my career. Highly recommend this book to new teachers or teachers who struggle with classroom management. This really helped me reflected on practices and gave me more strategies to use in my classroom. I also really loved how their online access gives me 2 weeks of lesson plans to start out the school year.
In addition I recommend Fred Jones' Tools of Teaching after reading this. The authors even referenced Jones a few times throughout their book. I feel so much better returning back to the classroom after reading this! Thanks Smith!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2017Smith and Dearborn put into words what I have felt, but did not fully comprehend about classroom management. Identifying and naming the elusive, but all important elements of the successful classroom allows me to feel AND know how the magic happens. This is a guide for the heart and the mind.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2010This book is the best resource to understanding classroom management...there is no magic peel, or recipe to follow. It begins with you, the teacher. It starts with deciding what kind of classroom do you desire to have and Teach your students how to create it. I would add Rick Smith provides other information about planning, organizing, and evaluating all the components necessary for effective teaching & classroom preparation as well. Get this book...it will help your novice and veteran teaching staff improve their practice.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2014This is a excellent book for the beginning teacher or the teacher in the field with the difficult class. Students are a different breed these days and you have to think through and respond not react when students misbehave.
Rick Smith is a national speaker and knows what works.
You will enjoy the ease of using this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of useful insights
I enjoyed the book. Definitely worth the effort.
It's interesting, and there are plenty of tips.
I'm not sure, though, if "children want to learn behaviour"...and there are some American colloquial words that I'm not familiar with.
