Google and Fiat Chrysler announced Tuesday afternoon that the companies would be working together on creating more self-driving car prototypes.
The cars, 100 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids, would be provided by Fiat Chrysler, and Google would work with Fiat Chrysler engineers to retrofit its autonomous car tech into them.
This is how those Pacificas come when they don't have a ton of futuristic self-driving sensors and devices attached to them.
The Chrysler Pacifica minivan was completely designed for the 2017 model year.
It used to be more of a crossover than a minivan.
The Pacifica Hybrid has an electric range of 30 miles and a combined range of 530 miles.
When it's not hauling a ton of autonomous car tech, Pacificas can be equipped with decently-luxurious interiors.
It can also come with most of the other basic features that most infotainment systems have now.
The center screen can be used a basic instruction manual so that you don't have to go digging in the massive owner's manual. Chrysler calls it the Uconnect Vehicle User Guide.
Adaptive Cruise Control, Advanced Brake Assist, Automatic High-Beam Control, collision warning systems, Lane Departure Warning, Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist, and a ton of other high-tech safety features are available in the Pacifica's Advanced Safetytec package for an additional $2,000.
Passengers in the back are kept entertained with the optional $2,000 Uconnect package. This comes with a 20-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a Blu-Ray and DVD player with USB hook-up and an HDMI-in plug.
There's also a ton of room to haul things.
Pricing for the 2017 Pacifica starts at $28,595. With all of the option boxes selected, that price can skyrocket to well-above $40,000.
Google said in a press release it's a fan of the Pacifica because it's a larger vehicle and that it gives engineers "an opportunity to test a larger vehicle that could be easier for passengers to enter and exit, particularly with features like hands-free sliding doors."
