Before fine dining restaurants served lobsters, the crustaceans were considered the "cockroaches of the sea."
It wasn't until the 1950s that people started thinking of lobsters as a delicacy, rather than ocean-bound beetles.
Katharina Unger, CEO of Livin Farms, hopes the same rebranding will eventually happen with mealworms.
"In our logical mindset, we know that it's sustainable and healthy to eat insects," Unger tells Tech Insider. "But we don't have a relationship to them as a food source."
Livin Farms built a 6-layer kitchentop hive that grows edible worms as a meat alternative. The company has raised over $76,000 of its $100,000 Kickstarter goal.
