As we approach our 25th year, we're delighted to be featured in the Times Higher Education this week. Our publication is non-profit and owned by its contributors, whose articles are remunerated in payments of up to 20 shares – depending on the length and complexity of the articles – which deliver annual royalties. Our contributor-owned model should be considered as a financing mechanism for academic journals. In the words of our founding editor Dr Robert Clark, 'It’s a debate that ought to be had…because the present model is really not good. [...] Academic publishing has become part of international global financing. [It] has lost relationships, definitely, with individual readers and is overproducing in an extraordinary manner. It’s only really interested in the bottom line. Selling the entire platform of their products to a university library – that’s how they make money.' The Literary Encyclopedia reposted this
Please share and/or repost if possible! Thank you. I am delighted to share that I started my editorial role as the Utopia&Dystopia and Utopian&Dystopian Literature, Speculative Fiction, and Science Fiction Sections Editor of The Literary Encyclopedia. If you want to contribute with an article, please get in touch with me! Information for contributions could be found via this link: https://lnkd.in/e_9V_x5v You could reach me at [email protected] to discuss possible article ideas! “Overview First published in September 2000, The Literary Encyclopedia provides 9837 articles about world literatures in English, amounting to 20 million words. It grows by 20-30 articles per month and is written and edited by university specialists who own the publication collectively. Contents The Literary Encyclopedia publishes biographies of major and minor writers; scholarly descriptions of all interesting texts written by these authors, and a variety of descriptive and critical essays on literary, cultural, and historical matters which provide a finer understanding of the social contexts in which this writing was produced. We seek to cover all of world literature and endeavour to publish articles on all writing of enduring cultural interest. Already we offer excellent coverage of English, American, modern European and Classical literatures, as well as substantial and increasing coverage of Hispanic, Japanese and various postcolonial literatures. Notably in recent years we have been adding a rich coverage of Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Icelandic writing. Other literatures will be added as soon as we have editors qualified to undertake the work. The Literary Encyclopedia is a peer-reviewed publication. Most articles are commissioned by our editors from established specialists, but we will also consider proposals from doctoral researchers. As mentioned above, we are proud to be an exemplary not-for-profit scholar-owned publication. All editors and authors accrue shareholding in the publication and can see their contribution and shareholder status displayed in their personal account pages. Shareholders receive annual statements of the company accounts and are consulted about all decisions which might affect their proprietorial rights.” University of Warwick Harvard University University of Oxford EUTOPIA The Literary Encyclopaedia
