d animals common to New England. May 18, 1631: It is ordered, that no person shall kill any wild swine without a general agreement at some court. The bear was quite social with our fathers, and for a century kept hold of his home here. He was far less destructive than the wolf. Wolves and wild-cats were such devourers of sheep that premiums were paid for their heads. Sept. 6, 1631, we find these records: The wolves did much hurt to calves and swine between Charles River and Mistick. Sept. 2, 1635: It is ordered, that there shall be 5s. for every wolf, and is. for every fox, paid out of the treasury to him who kills the same. Nov. 20, 1637: 10s. shall be paid for every wolf, and 2s. for every fox. Wolves have disappeared from this locality; but foxes are occasionally seen. Deer were very common when our fathers settled in Medford; and, until the beginning of this century, our inhabitants chose annually an officer whom they called Deer Reeve. The amount of money raised and expended during the war for State aid to soldiers' families, and repaid by the Commonwealth, was as follows: In 1861, $390.92; in 1862, $2,725.66; in 1863, $3,491.00; in 1864, $4,194.20; in 1865, $3,766.04. Total amount, $14,567.82. Concord Incorporated Sept. 2, 1635. Population in 1860, 2,246; in 1865, 2,231. Valuation in 1860, $1,663,507; in 1865, $1,658,881. The selectmen in 1861 were Ephraim W. These were made up afterwards by the ladies of West Roxbury, assisted by the ladies of Falmouth, Yarmouth, Chelmsford, Massachusetts; and of Charlestown, New Hampshire. A number of the ladies of West Roxbury paid a regular assessment of twelve dollars a year for four years. Weymouth Incorporated Sept. 2, 1635. Population in 1860, 7,742; in 1865, 7,981. The whole amount of money appropriated and expended by the town on account of the war, exclusive of State aid, was twenty-eight thousand five hundred and eighty-one dollars ($28,581.00). The amount of money raised and expended by the town during the war for State aid to soldiers' families, and repaid by the Commonwealth, was as follows: In 1861, $719.20; in 1862, $2,093.10; in 1863, $3,282.80; in 1864, $3,824.78; in 1865, $2,714.01.
