an apology as might be suggested by a reference to the ruder state of society and the less perfect dispensation under which he lived. It contains, however, much ingenious historical argument, and several admirable specimens of biblical criticism, applied to some of the most difficult and obscure passages of the Old Testament. This work was chiefly prepared for the press during the author's last illness, and did not make its appearance till after his decease, which happened on the 8th of May, 1766, in his seventy-third year.
