g in August, the command of the regiment was held by Major Cartwright. It was sent to James Island May 30, becoming part of the 1st Brigade, Stevens' Division, and engaged with loss in the action at Fort Johnson, Secessionville, June 16. Returning to Hilton Head, the regiment formed part of the force sent to reinforce the Army of the Potomac, and reached Newport News July 18. Forming part of the 9th Corps, it moved to join the Army of Virginia, and took active part at Manassas August 29 and 30 and at Chantilly September 1. Moving with the army into Maryland, it was present at South Mountain, and engaged on the afternoon of September 17 at Antietam. In November the regiment became part of Meagher's Irish Brigade, 1st Division, 2d Army Corps, and met heavy loss at Fredericksburg in the assault on the heights December 13.
