rom the Diary of a Staff Officer. Before we had completed our customary redoubts, Gen. Gibbon ordered the right section forward to an advanced position. It Hosea O. Barnes was placed behind a low earthwork—a mere rifle-pit already thrown up which afforded little protection for the men—in the edge of some pines; and as there was over to cut it away; but just as they were completing this task an explosive bullet from a Rebel sharpshooter laid one of them low, mortally wounded.
