ed work, I had the satisfaction to see you pass me with all the steamers of the mortar flotilla, which doubtless prevented much annoyance from the enemy. Clearing the bushes with canister from our howitzers, the surveyors, Messrs. Oltmanns and Bowie, landed in one of our boats and prosecuted their work without molestation. On the 14th, we resumed the work, and carried the triangulation well up to the forts on the right bank of the river, supported by the Westfield, Commander Renshaw. Theed an 11-inch shell into Fort Jackson, to try their range. They fired twice in return, one of the shots passing over us and falling a quarter of a mile astern, the other just ahead of us. Too much praise cannot be awarded Messrs. Oltmanns and Bowie for the intrepid and skillful manner in which they performed this service. On the 16th, the Owasco accompanied you in your experimental trial with three of the mortar schooners in trying the ranges on the forts from the left bank of the river.
