1849, to Amanda Wherry, who died in 1852; and in 1870 to E. M. Williams, by whom he has four children. William J. Crawford, one of the leading planters of Fairfield county, S. C., was born at Winnsboro, in 1839, the son of Thomas and Isabella (Bryson) Crawford. His father came to Canada from Ireland, where he remained for six years following the occupation of a stonecutter. After moving to South Carolina, he opened a stone quarry at Winnsboro, where he carried on an extensive business. The's comrades, and he escaped. He was a brave soldier and his life during the four years struggle was full of thrilling and interesting incidents. Since the war he has farmed in Laurens county. He has been married twice, first in 1866, to Miss Byphemia Bryson, who died in 1867, and in 1868 he was married to Mrs. Emma E. Hill, widow of R. W. Hill and daughter of Harrison Finley.
