ended from the Warrenton road on our extreme right to the railroad; General John H. Forney's division occupied the center, from the railroad to the Graveyard road; General M. L. Smith's division filling up the space between the Graveyard road and the river on our left. General John S. Bowen's Missourians and Waul's Texas Legion were held in reserve. The defenses were divided into three districts as follows: First: General Stevenson's line, Captain P. Robinson, chief engineer, with Captain J. J. Conway, Captain James Couper, Lieutenant A. W. Gloster, Lieutenant R. R. Southard, and Sergeant W. B. H. Saunders as assistants. Second: The rest of the rear line: Captain D. Wintter, chief engineer, with Captain James Hogane, Lieutenant E. McMahon, Lieutenant F. Gillooly, Lieutenant S. McD. Vernon, and Lieutenant Blessing as assistants. Third: The river front commanded by Colonel Edward Higgins, First Lieutenant William O. Flynn, engineer. The working force under the direct control of t
e, and I specially commend them and Major J. Thompson to the favorable consideration of the government. No officer in the department has been more constantly and actively engaged than Major Samuel Lockett, Chief Engineer, for his professional skill and excellent judgment, wherever occasion required it, from Grenada to Port Hudson; during the siege of Vicksburg, none exposed themselves more fearlessly to danger than he and his gallant assistants, Captains Powhattan Robinson, James Cooper, J. J. Conway, D. Winter, and James Hagan, and Lieutenants E. W. MeMahon, W. O. Flynn, Geo. Donnelan, W. A. Gloster, Southard, Blessing, and Mr. Ginder. It gives me pleasure to name them, and to ask a recognition of their merits. I consider myself to have been particularly fortunate in the selection of Chief Quartermaster of the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. Major L. C. S. District Court. --In Judge Halyburton's Court on Saturday morning the following business was transacted: William Newell, for representing that he is illegally detained in the custody of J. J. Conway, Capt. Co. A, 1st regiment engineer troops, stationed near Camp Lee, who asks for a discharge on the ground that he was over the age of forty five years at the time he was arrested as a conscript and assigned to said company, the Court, after fully considering the petition, arguments of counsel, and evidence adduced, ordered that the said Newell be discharged from the service. It appeared from the evidence that Newell was arrested in Raleigh. N.
