A Negro, named John, slave of Saml. Hastings, was carried before the Mayor yesterday, having been apprehended by the police as a runaway. The darkey had in his possession a document which was looked upon as a "suspicious letter." It was undoubtedly entitled to that appellation, but not in a point of view that would make its possessor liable, as intending "treason and stratagems" against the State. The letter discoursed on the subject of the love that was consuming his vitals for one "Misays, "I think me and you would make a pretty pare." In conclusion, the amorous swain advises his lub to get other "ladies" and come to see him. He is sweetly seductive just here, for, says he: "roses red an violets blew, pinks is putty, and so are you." His promise to have his likeness "took" and sent to her was prevented by his being "took" instead. The original of the intended picture was sent to Mr. Hastings, and the watchman was rewarded with a five dollar certificate for taking John up.
