After the surrender he returned home and engaged in farming until 1886, in which year he was elected treasurer of Sumter county, filling that position four years. In 1893 he received the appointment of postmaster of the city of Sumter, which place he filled until 1898. He is at present chairman of the board of education of Sumter.
