Arrested for Forgery. --On Saturday last a man named Jones was arrested in this city on the charge of forging officer's pay rolls, and obtaining money thereon. He was committed to the military prison of the city, where he will, perhaps, remain until the time arrives for an impartial hearing of his case. Jones has figured rather conspicuously in this city within the past six months. He was last spring charged by Capt. The rogues decoyed the old negro into a sequestered spot last Sunday, under pretence of having some flour to sell him, when William grabbed his money, which he had in his hand, and ran off, while Elijah held him and prevented him from making any outcry. After William had been arrested Elijah came to the old negro and returned him his fifty dollars, and tried to induce him not to prosecute the ease. Edward, slave of Mr. Wm. Winston Jones, was charged with attempting to break into the tailoring establishment of Mr. Gustavus R. Howard, and with shooting at watchman Marcellus Hicks, with intent to kill him.--The negro had several severe wounds on the top of his head, inflicted by Mr. Hicks's club on the night of the attempted burglary.--The circumstances of the case, as they came out in the evidence, may be briefly summed up. Hustings Court. --The case of Edward, slave of Wm. Winston Jones, charged with plotting to take the life of watchman Fabius Hicks, by shooting at him with a pistol, commenced on Wednesday, was concluded on yesterday by the Court acquitting the accused. R. L. Saunders, charged with stealing locks from the enclosures and vaults in Hollywood Cemetery, was examined and sent on to the Judge for trial. Wm. Byrd, charged with stealing a $20 gold piece from Lafayette Brooks, was examined and acquitted. In the case of Wm. Ryan, charged will shooting John Collins, a nolle prosequi was entered, it appearing to the Court that Collins had gone beyond the confines of the Confederate States.
