ould not believe that it was the intention of the Council to interdict grocers in the neighborhood of the market from buying and selling in their stores butter, eggs, &c., during market hours, while merchants in a more remote part of the city were permitted to do so. Several members of the Council gave their views about the matter, the most of them sustaining the Mayor's decision. The Council then, after having the subject under consideration for more than an hour, refused to remit the fine or give the petitioner remuneration for the butter confiscated. The Committee on Almshouse and Public Grounds presented a report in relation to a petition from Mr. George Minor, asking for additional compensation for work done on the alms-house. The report recommends that the sum of $1,000 be appropriated for that purpose, which was adopted. The amended ordinance of the city concerning hacks, drays, &c., was then taken up, and, as amended, adopted. The Council then adjourned.
