Holmes' staff at First Manassas. The Second Arkansas infantry (Confederate) was organized through the energy of Hon. Thomas C. Hindman, of Helena, Ark., who was representative in Congress in 1861, for the Second district of Arkansas. He resigned his seat upon the secession of the State, and returning home began recruiting volunteers for the Confederate States army; soon forming a full regiment of which he was elected colonel; J. W. Bocage, lieutenant-colonel; J. W. Scaife, major. Charles E. Patterson was appointed adjutant; Dr. Ralph Horner, surgeon, and Rev. Samuel Cowley, chaplain. The captains were: Company A, C. A. Bridewell; Company B, Thomas Quinlin; Company C, E. Warfield; Company D, E. G. Brashear; Company E, Anderson; Company F, D. C. Govan; Company G, B. B. Taliaferro; Company H, R. F.
