cademy in 1842. Four years later he was graduated as brevet second lieutenant and immediately entered upon service in the war with Mexico. He was engaged in the siege of Vera Cruz, the battles of Cerro Gordo, Contreras, Churubusco and Molino del Rey, in the last being severely wounded. He afterward served on the frontier and on garrison duty, and by 1858 had attained the rank of captain. He resigned his position in the United States army on January 28, 1861, and entering the service of the familiar with all the discomforts and perils of army life. He participated in the principal engagements of the Mexican war; for heroic conduct at Contreras was promoted to major, and for similar gallantry was made lieutenant-colonel at Molino del Rey, where he was desperately wounded. For a long time it was thought that he would die, but his life was spared for service in a more stupendous conflict In 1849 the State of Georgia presented a sword to Colonel Walker as a tribute to his gallantry
