simplifies the business of making mortises by boring a hole perpendicularly or at any required angle. The auger is rotated by the double-crank shaft and the intervention of bevel-gearing. The auger feeds it into the wood, but pressure can be brought thereon if necessary. The auger is raised vertically from the hole by throwing the rack at the side in gear with a wheel on the crank-shaft, and rotating the latter. The rack is thrown in and out by an eccentric; an arrangement patented by Stanley and Johnson, September 12, 1865. Carpenter's boring-machine.
