J. S. Bowers, arrested in Berkeley county on the charge of disloyalty to the Southern Confederacy, was examined on Saturday before Special Commissioner Lyons, and there being no evidence against him except that he attended the first Wheeling Convention, which assembled before the act of Secession was ratified, and which was guilty of no treasonable proceedings, he was permitted to take the oath of allegiance, and was then discharged from custody.

Bringing them up. --A great portion of the militia of Berkeley county, in defiance of law and right, having heretofore refused to perform militia duty, peremptory orders have been issued from military headquarters to force them out, or to treat them as deserters or alien enemies. This will have the effect of compelling them to perform the part of good and loyal citizens, or cause them to leave for more congenial regions. Berkeley is one of the few counties of Virginia where tories and traitors are to-be found.
