other rams had their noses hardened in like manner. All had the usual-shaped stems. Not one had an iron beak or projecting plow under water. All of them had their Lieutenant Beverley Kennon, C. S. N., Commander of the Governor Moore. from a photograph. boiler-houses, engines, and boilers protected by a bulkhead of cotton bales which extended from the floor of the hold to five feet or more above the spar-deck. These and other such vessels were fitted out by the State and the city of New Orleans after the regular navy neglected to take them, and to Lieutenant-Colonel W. S. Captain Squires, who commanded Fort St. Philip, informed me that his fort had fired seventy-five times at the Manassas, mistaking her for a disabled vessel of the enemy's floating down-stream. The Manassas was not struck once by Fort St. Philip. The following are the only officers living, as far as I know, who were with me on the night referred to: Engineers George W. Weaver and T. A. Captain Theodorus Bailey, being second in command, claimed the privilege of carrying ashore the demand for the surrender of the city. This was accorded him by the flag-officer, and the captain, accompanied by Lieutenanht be shot by the indignant populace assembled on the surrounding house-tops, and he expressed his fears in the hope that he would not be held responsible for the act, in case it should be perpetrated. Fortunately for the peace of the city of New Orleans, the vast crowd looked on in sullen silence as the flag came down. The Confederate cruisers. by Professor James Russell Soley, U. S. N. The first of the ocean cruisers of the Confederate navy, as distinguished from the privateers, was the Sumter. This steamer, formerly the Habana, of the New Orleans and Havana line, was altered into a ship-of-war in April and May, 1861, and, under the command of Captain Raphael Semmes, escaped from the Mississippi early in July, after an unsuccessful chase by the Brooklyn, which was at the time blockading the mouth of the river. Her cruise lasted six months, during which she made fifteen prizes. Of these seven were destroyed, one was ransomed, one recaptured, and the remaining six were sent into Cienfuegos, where they were released by the Cuban authorities. In January the Sumter arrived at Gibraltar, where she was laid up and finally sold. as Military Governor of New Orleans, who at once organized an efficient police force and made the city a model of quiet and good order. This vigor was followed by the arrest of William B. Mumford, his trial and conviction by a military court, and his execution as a traitor in the presence of a vast multitude, who quietly dispersed to their homes, with the salutary reflection that the Government had indeed repossessed its property, and was exercising its rightful authority in the city of New Orleans. Mumford was a professional gambler, and consequently an enemy of society. He was about forty-two years of age. We suppose not, for he is spoken of by The Observer as an old man. He was a Baptist. He could read his Bible, and he did read it. It is also mentioned that his wife was an excellent cook --a remarkable combination of merits in one lot! Whether the excellent cook, if dead, has a grave-stone, or, if living, a fair prospect of that ornamental remembrance to solace her stewing and boiling labors, we are not informed.
