Hale, Edward Everett 1822- Clergyman; born in Boston, April 3, 1822; graduated at Harvard College in 1839; studied theology and became minister of the Church of the Unity, Worcester, Mass., in Edward Everett Hale. 1846, where he remained till 1856, when he became minister of the South church (Unitarian), Boston. In May, 1899, he resigned his pastorate after a service of forty-three years. Joshua Thomas was judge of probate in Plymouth county, Mass., and was a man of unblemished reputation in public and private life. Joseph Lyman was a lawyer, and for several years held the office of sheriff of his county. George Bliss was an eminent lawyer, distinguished for his learning, industry, and integrity. He was several times a member of the Massachusetts legislature. Daniel Waldo was a resident of Worcester, where he established himself in early life as a merchant. He was a State Senator, but would seldom consent to an election to office. Samuel Sumner Wilde was a lawyer, and was raised to a seat on the bench of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts. Hodijah Baylies was an officer in the Continental army, in which he served efficiently. He was for many years judge of probate in his county, and was distinguished for sound understanding, fine talents, and unimpeachable integrity. Step

Haven, Samuel Forster 1806-1881 Archaeologist; born in Dedham, Mass., May 28, 1806; graduated at Amherst College in 1826; became a lawyer, and practised in Dedham and Lowell. His published addresses include a Centennial address; Records of the Company of the Massachusetts Bay to the embarkation of Winthrop and his associates for New England; History of grants under the Great council for New England, etc.; and his longer works include Archaeology of the United States; and an edition of Thomas's History of printing in America. He died in Worcester, Mass., Sept. 5, 1881.

Hilliard, Francis 1808-1878 Jurist; born in Cambridge, Mass., about 1808; graduated at Harvard College in 1823. His publications include Digest of Pickering's reports; American law of real property; American Jurisprudence; Law of New trials and other Rehearings, etc. He died in Worcester, Mass., Oct. 9, 1878.

Hoar, George Frisbie 1826- Legislator; born in Concord, Mass., Aug. 29, 1826; graduated at Harvard in 1846; studied law, and practised in Worcester, Mass. He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1852, and of the Senate in 1857; city attorney in 1860; member of Congress in 1869-77; and became United States Senator in the latter year. He was a delegate to the National Republican Conventions of 1876, 1880, and 1884; and one of the managers George Frisbie Hoar. on the part of the House of Representatives in the Belknap impeachment case in 1876.

Johnson, Helen Kendrick 1843- Author; born in Hamilton, N. Y., Jan. 4, 1843; daughter of Asahel C. Kendrick, the Greek scholar and author; was educated at the Oread Institute, Worcester, Mass. She has edited Our familiar songs, and those who made them; The American woman's journal, etc. Her original works are The Roddy books; Raleigh Westgate; and Woman and the republic. She has contributed many articles to periodicals, and is specially known as an opponent of woman suffrage.

ain. I asked of some seventy libraries their yearly expenditure for current fiction in proportion to their total expenditure for books. The returns show an average of from 10 to 15 per cent. In one case the amount reached 50 per cent., in others it fell as low as 2 per cent. The ratio for fiction in general is much higher on the average; but fiction in general includes Scott and Thackeray and other standards, an ample supply of which would not usually be questioned. At Providence and at Worcester, two of the most active and popular of public libraries, the purchases of fiction, current and standard, formed in a single year but 7 and 11 per cent., respectively, of the entire expenditure for books. At Boston there were selected but 178 titles of current fiction (out of nearly 600 read and considered). But some dozen copies were bought of each title, so that the entire purchase reached 2,300 volumes, and cost about $2,300. This was about 6 1/2 per cent. on a total expenditure for b

Lincoln, Levi 1749-1820 Statesman; born in Hingham, Mass., May 15, 1749; graduated at Harvard in 1772; member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1796 and a State Senator in 1797. In 1800 he was elected to Congress and served until Feb. 6, 1801, when he was appointed Attorney-General of the United States, and for a short period was acting Secretary of State. He died in Worcester, Mass., April 14, 1820.
