Townsend, Thomas S. 1829-
Compiler; born in New York City, Aug. 27, 1829; received a classical education, and later entered a mercantile firm in New York City.
In 1860 he began a chronological history of every important occurrence in connection with the impending Civil War, by clipping from the newspapers every statement of value relating to the subject and the record of every military officer in both armies.
His collection comprised 120 volumes, and
Benjamin Franklin Tracy. is now in the library of Columbia University, New York.
He delivered many lectures and addresses on the Civil War.
