d at first been driven by the enemy on Tuesday evening. At an early period of the war he entered the service of his country and left New Orleans as first lieutenant of company C, Louisiana Guard. He was subsequently appointed Adjutant-General of Wright's brigade, and was afterwards, during a temporary unfitness for field service, assigned to the command of a local defence battalion at Augusta, Georgia, and, we believe, was for a time in command of the arsenal at that place., At a more recent peappointed Adjutant-General on General Mahone's staff, with the rank of captain, and after the battle of the 30th July, in front of Petersburg, was promoted to the temporary rank of Brigadier-General. At the time of his death he was in command of Wright's brigade. General Girardey has shown a remarkable degree of capacity and intelligence during the war. He distinguished himself in the battles around Richmond in 1862, and acted with conspicuous gallantry at Sharpsburg, Gettysburg and Chancellor
